Is there a good quality portable DAC/amp that would be a good match for the 6XX?
Have you looked at the schiit fulla 2? Also whats you're budget and what are you looking to get out of it.
Well I have the Micca Origen+ right now and have looked at the Fulla 2. I'd like to keep the price under $200 CAD if possible. I was looking at the Aune B1S but it's not an active drop right now. I've looked at stuff from Fiio as well like the A5 and the Q1 MII. Yeah I'm sure something like the Aune X1S or X7 would be much better than a "portable" option. But I want want something that can connect to my Macbook Pro (2014) while chilling on the couch.
Have you looked at the dragonfly red? It is extremely portable if thats the most important aspect for you.
what's the difference between that and the DragonFly black? Besides the $100 price difference on Amazon.
I'm not an expert on it because I don't own one and I don't want to give you false information but I would assume an increase in sound quality.
hmm okay. Something that small could power headphones like the 6XX? There is no hi/low gain on the dragonfly.
The DFR’s 2.1v voltage output is optimized for high impedance headphones such as the HD600/650/6xx (300 ohms average nominal) or HD660s/HD58x (150 ohms). Given that the HD6xx is rather efficient for a high impedance headphone (1mw of output power will give you 103db or sound pressure if I recall), then yes the DFR can easily power the HD6xx. That said, if you must have those heavy bass transients of 115-120 db for rock stadium sound pressure levels, then look elsewhere for much higher rated headphone amps. For my part, the DFR suits me well with the HD6xx at much higher than moderate sound volumes, no issue here for my part. I love the DFR/HD6xx/iPhone X or iPad Pro combo when I cannot use my desktop headphone amp. Sound wise, the DFR is a good match to the HD6xx, enabling good thighter clean bass and slightly more exciting treble, two areas where the HD6xx may benefit. The DFR is still very natural and neutral sounding and hasn’t any sound flaws by itself, just well complementing the HD6xx in its bass and treble sound signature. The Sabre ESS9016 DAC/digital volume amp combo inside the Dragonfly Red is just amazing sounding. It is a complete different breed compared to the 1v output of the Dragonfly Black, which has no digital volume amp and a lower maximum 1V output power less suited for high impedance headphones such as the HD6xx.
Do you think the DFR is worth $200 USD? The DFB is $99. Would there be a noticeable difference in sound?
it is worth the price difference if you need its extra features, which are basically a higher voltage output (2.1v versus 1v) and a digital amp volume integrated in the DAC. I haven’t heard the DFB, I heard from the reviews that it is a good product at a sweet price. Like the DFR, the DFB can be plugged in a lightning (Apple) output or its Android equivalent with in each case the proper connector. The biggest advantage of both units is that it uses solely the USB (or lightning) power to power itself, no external power supply needed, so it is very portable. However I would use the DFB only with low impedance/high efficiency headphones because of its low voltage output limited to 1V. Otherwise, you are better off with the DFR. Just my 2 cents of recommendation...
Hmm okay. Well I have a Micca Origen+ right now. It does pretty well but it does seem more for desk use than portable.
Ould go for audio GD 28.32. Unbeateable price/quality for a professional amp/dac with latest dac Series.
That doesn't seem to be in my price range. If I can keep it under $200 CAD that would be great.
