A no brainer - if you're looking for what are called "the best headphones for under $1,000" - do yourself a favor and buy these. Literally zero difference from the Sennheiser HD 650s.
The best headphone under $1000 is the AKG 712 Pro. Practically exactly same signature and level of details as the HD800S but with much better and refined bass. I spent hours listening to both with several hi end Amps in Japan and I was shocked how the 2 were similar but the edge goes to the AKG 712 hands down for the amazing more tight and refined bass which the 800S was lacking and confort. The AKG 712 has some of the best pads ever made imo.
If you like strong accurate base. They have terrible midrange accuracy. Like a lot of things, its all what you prefer.
I did not find they have a strong base just perfectly tuned with the rest of the frequencies. I loved the midrange on the HD800S and the ones on the AKG 712 I fund are very much up there on my auditioning. I listened to them both for probably 3 hours using 4 different Hi End Amps as I really wanted to buy the 800S. I really liked the overall sound of the AKG 712 compared to the 800S but they were so damn close imo. After this auditioning I went to read some comparison in internet as I could not believe it and I fund reviewers in you tube that owned both and thought the same exact thing. One of the owners even said if they knew how good the AKG 712 were he would not have bought the 800S. I could not believe a 300USD headphone could match the top tier Sennheiser and in all probability beat it for sound, confort and costing many times less.
