How do these compare to the Audio Technica AD900X? Primarily interested in using for FPS so it would need to have a big soundstage and able to pin point footsteps.
Im stuck between both of them too
The AD900x has a much bigger soundstage than these, the HD6XX has a more natural soundstage so from that perspective it's relatively easier to "pinpoint" or image, but frankly either headphone will be sufficient for gaming, the bottleneck isn't in your headphone, it's in low fidelity gaming audio.
I do quite enjoy music on the AD900x but my main issue with them is with their grainy sound which lack transparency. OTOH the main issue with the HD6XX is they need quite a bit of good gear to get a large soundstage from them, tube amps will work best here.
Are tube amps good for games ? I'm trying to decide between Aune X7S balanced and tube amps (for HD6XX)
Keep the AD900x, the HD6xx is arguably worse for gaming due to smaller soundstage.
Another option is the k7xx which is good for gaming too.
It's neither good or bad for games. Both options you've listed are an overkill for games. Personally I prefer tube sound over solid state, at least at this price point. The HD6XX is great on a nice warm tube, the dark sound on these headphones goes really well with a warm amp.
