I have massdrop O2 amp and tired of waiting for massdrop grace dac. Using the amp with the fioo e10k at the moment. Anyone suggestions for suitable replacements in the 100 dollars range please? thought of combining with a schiit at one moment.. i also checked online for jds labs, mayflower etc.. or should i just keep waiting for that grace...
KrisBaliMy personal pick is the ol dac by jds labs, i actually have the usb one which is 99$ if im not wrong. I like it a lot and it is well regarded as a combo as well.
KrisBaliWell let me break it down for you.
Firstly, you actually want a dac if the files you are going to be playing are hi-res. That means at least 320 kbps which is kinda fine tbh, up to lossless 1411 (cd quality) or master quality (tidal hi-fi). Another reason you want the external dac is you get noise or interference or just not enough quality for your ears. The thing is you already have a dac, which is portable and not desktop, but a decent one. Do you feel you need an upgrade or a complete desktop system? Then go for it.
Off to another subject, i said my personal preference is the ol dac but that does not mean the other products have flaws, for example the schiit modi 2 is well regarded and vastly sold too. I got it partly because i liked it and it stacked nicely with my jds o2 amp. I can definitely guarantee that it is a solidly built and transparent sounding product though. One other thing is you can opt for the optical one if you have spdif output, same as the modi2u.
The clue? Well I am not sure what i would do if I were you. I mean, don't get me wrong I love the sound I am getting and more than that I love the price I paid for it, but I think you would be off to an unpleasant surprise if you actually didn't find enough difference to the sound after you've spent 100+$.
Reading my reply I think I confused you more than you were before and I'm sorry for that, but that's the way things are. Off to some good buys and I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions if you decide to get one.
ILIASThanks for breaking it down for me ILIAS. No its not more confusing, its just more information for me to make a better informed decision.
The only thing that actually annoys me is having to guess if there will be improvement in the sound through user feedback. I have no idea if I will notice any difference from the fiio e10k to to the ol dac and its a risk to take as you suggested. A 130 dollars risk ! (including shipping and customs fees). :)
I don't mind sticking with the fiio but something inside just wondering, what if the sound could be significantly better with the jds labs. Typical reaction of the unlimited wants of mankind I suppose. Would have been good if there was a way to try it out first but unfortunately that does not exist. I deduced that the high price of jds products is because it is produced on a small scale. I guess for now I will just keep waiting for the grace which is supposed to be cheaper when it releases, if it ever does release...
