View Full Discussion I hopped on the May drop as a complete newcomer to hifi audio and I'm pretty much broke right now. Are there any budget amp/dacs that you recommend that are under $100? Do I even need a dac or can I get away with just an amp? I'm from Canada btw so if it's not on amazon.ca I get a nice $30 import tax slapped on.
Will it run the headphones properly?
I am also in the may drop and purchased the Fulla 2 for these. Also new to the hifi world. I got the Fulla 2 because it has the same DAC chip as the Modi and also an AMP. So if I ever want to upgrade I just really need an amp and can use the Fulla 2 as DAC only. Its a good little DAC/AMP
If you are tight on money you can check the B-Stock section on Schiit audio website for cheaper prices.
just got a magni 2 on b stock, added it to my fulla 2 and currently using the fulla 2 as my dac/control freak. it makes worlds of difference even on easy headphones.
a magni 3 is only 100 + shipping, but a magni 2 is 60 shipping in, and i heard it's less good. but idk about 50 dollars less good.
the fulla 2 was still a cool purchase cause it's a good dac, has passive volume knob for something like powered monitors, and can line out to a headphone amp.
How does it sound without the fulla 2 and using the magni 3 only out of your audio source?
I second what duriantofu asked about how it sounds with a Fulla 2 and a Magni 3. I'm considering a similar setup. I have an Audioengine D1, which is a lot like the Fulla 2 and I'm thinking of adding a Magni 3 to boost the levels. It actually sounds pretty good with just the D1, but I have a feeling it could be a bit better.
i just plugged it into my front panel, it sounds legit awful. the highs are WAY too high, to the point where it was painful even at low listening volume. get a dac.
btw i have a magni 2, not a magni 3.
my ears are bleeding right now. it was at like normal listening volumes but the highs just piece right through your ears.
Wow, I wouldn't hav expected it to be this bad.
Once you get a decent DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), you realize most of the fatiguing “problems” of audio aren’t due to the headphones. Desktop computers’ DACs (from the motherboard, sometimes wired with extensions to the front panel), laptop DACs, and Smartphone DACs are usually cheap off the shelf cost-saving choices by manufacturers. And amps can have background hiss, crush the soundstage to a small size, smear the locational accuracy, leave bass muddy and anemic. This is partly why they say the HD 6XX can scale up so well with better upstream gear... once you have a quality headphone around $100-$300 with the sound signature you like, it’s not uncommon for enthusiasts to end up spending more on the amp/DAC/etc than the headphone itself.
By the way, a DAC is a whole circuit; even though the chip in the base Modi and the Fulla 2 might be the same, the resultant sound won’t necessarily be the same.
I have heard the Modi sounds better than the Fulla 2, but if you can't afford a stack definitely go Fulla 2 first then get the Magni 3 when you are ready. IMO
Oh, don’t get me wrong, the Fulla 2, or a Creative Sound Blaster Omni, or FiiO E10k (for different features) are great starting points! Used to be, I couldn’t get into music listening, but looking back it was largely because the music sounded boring or outright fatiguing, so I always had the volume up really high or really low. Upgrading above garbage-tier is the biggest quality jump and game changer along the audio journey!
