I am going to be buying a pair of these tomorrow, I am looking for an Amp and Dac. What is the best pair/combo I can get for under $250?
I am considering the Modi 2/Magni 3 stack, are there any better dacs/amps in my price range for this headset?
I use Schiit Asgard 2 and recently Jotunheim with multibit USB. I've already ordered the balanced cables to work with the HD6xx's. I'd recommend getting Jotunheim as the Mani Magni are limited.
Motherboard powering 300ohm headphones sounds questionable
Idk, that's why I'm asking. I am new to these types of things. :D
My rule of thumb is PC or Apple have inexpensive DAC chips and a 3.5 Audio jack intended for Buds. A DAC/Amp be is built to drive 300 ohm phones with the clarity you would expect a digital file to have. Perhaps you'll be happy without a DAC/Amp.
I will eventually get a DAC/Amp.
If you can spring for the Modi Multibit, do it and never look back. Why? To my ear, it just sounds better. More real. More holographic. It simply sounds right. I don't regret it one bit. With my Asgard 2, it's a match made in audio paradise.
I was going to get a Magni 3 for my bedside setup, but opted for the less brute Vali 2 just to try the hybrid tube sound. It sounds fantastic, and runs my 600 ohm beyers on low gain with plenty of volume knob left. High gain is too much. But seriously, the Mimby sounds proper, like...more musical, more alive. Hard to explain. Everything else I own sounds like they lack what the Mimby has. I can attest that the "megacomboburrito" time-frequency domain filter Mike Moffat invented for his Multibit babies is not a gimmick, but it actually makes music sound more like music. God bless!
Spend a little more and get an Audio-gd R2R-11.
I have the Modi multibit + magni 3 stack (with loki eq) but the R2R-11 is great not just for the 6xx but also for your future planar headphones that you will buy, now that you've been introduced to this wicked world of headphone audio and everyone will convince you to get one and your curiosity will click on that join drop on a planar can.
Yes, me an addict.
I've been reading about the R2R-11 from Audio-gd and it seems interesting. The company also has a good philosophy, but still...I'm hesitant to bite the bullet. How is it? Does it sound good?
I am really impressed with it so far. My 4xx was a bit of a disappointment when pushed using my mimby magni 3 stack (horrid on lil dot mk2).
I was about to retire it on my wall of "not impressed"but decided to purchase the R2R-11 as last chance for the 4xx. It makes the 4xx sing, and have been using the 4xx than the 6xx after the R2R-11 arrived.
I plan to play with the "warm" jumper settings in a few weeks, after the burn in term, prescribed by kingwa himself.
Audio-GD amps operate in current mode, which can keep up with the demands of a planar better than a voltage mode amps like the Magni. They're no slouch with dynamics like the 6XX but can make the bass sound a bit warm.
