I have read that these headphones are lacking in bass, is this true? If so is their any way to improve on it given I am somewhat of a bass head and am interested in these.

They have a good amount of bass, they have decent extension down to about 30hz. I really enjoy electronic music where the bass is around 40-60hz. And these sound great. Deadmau5 4ware sounds perfect. Summertine magic by childish gambino, you can still hear the bass but it is not super loud. These are great sounding, overall, Great headphones!

You can always add base in EQ (at least till it starts clipping). There are some mods that help remove bass distortion (rear magnet damping), but none that improve bass response. If overpowering bass is a 'must have' in headphones for you, you may want to look at other headphone options (either as an alternative to these or as a compliment to them).

Do you know how the bass in these would compare to something like the dt 770's? I currently have those and the bass is pretty adequate.

The DT 770 has more bass by a fair amount than the HD 6xx (especially below ~50Hz). The 6xx does almost everything else better (well, except for isolation as they're open-back).
