The HD6XX is the best investment I've made in headphones. To my ears it's the best sounding headphone under $500. It amazes me how good these $200 headphones sound; even with the so called veil. To give you an idea of where I'm coming from, when I'm not listening to the HD6XX, I'm listening to my HD700, HD800S or Beyerdynamic T1 2nd Generation headphones. I also have the HD598 but they don't come close to the HD6XX in sound quality. I've used the HD6XX with my FiiO E17K Alpen 2, Matrix M-Stage HPA-3U, iFi Micro iDSD Black Label and Woo Audio WA2 (w/ Topping D50 DAC). The better the amp the better they sound. They impress me everytime I put them on. The HD6XX gives you more bang for the buck than anything else in the world of headphones. The only negative aspect I've noticed is the clamping force which is a bit too much for my head. I used my hands to spread the headband open. This reduced the clamping force and increased the comfort.
Still feel the HD 800 S's are superior to the 6XX in every way except maybe comfort. But considering the price difference, the 6XX is an amazing pair of headphones, I just kind of regret getting mine now that I've used 800 S's for so long. But I was missing my 650's and I'm a sucker for midnight blue... Agree its a great bang for you buck
Agreed. I don't think I will ever own a better sounding and more comfortable headphone than the HD800S. They are my end game. I use them with my Woo Audio WA2 amp equipped with warm sounding tubes like the RCA 6AS7g or Westinghouse 6520. Excellent!
The HD800S can't be called better than the HD6XX (and certainly not worse either) as they are very different sounding headphones.
The 8 range really can't be compared to the 6 range.
I have the 820 and 800S as well as the 660S, 650, 6XX, 600. 58X and 580 Precision and all these 6 series and old 5 series have their own distinct flavor.
Any of these 6 series are indeed a great value, true high-end phones at a very modest price. But very different from the 8 series.
