Does an open back headphone have better quality than a closed back
Not always, but a lot of them can. Open backs are often higher end and known to have better "sound stage", which can make them sound more spacious. There are definitely great closed back headphones out there though, so it's situationally dependant.
Really it depends on your needs/wants out of a headphone. If you want to do any recording or mixing of tracks closed back are the way to go, they have a very up close and personal sound and don't leak as much. If you want open, wide sound stage with a laid-back sound signature something like the HD6XX (open back). I prefer open backed IMO.
