I have a focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and just purchased the 6xx's. I realize I'm going to need an amp to really get the most out of these things but just curious how close the Scarlett 2i2 will get me being that I see all the time the question being "are they loud enough" and the Scarlett gets my ATH-AD700's plenty loud.

Your old headphones have an impedance of 38 ohms while the HD 6XX's are much further up the impedance scale at 300 ohms. The Sabaj Audio PHA2 or EarStudio ES100 amps are economical but worthy of consideration. The ES100 is on sale for $79.99 with coupon plus free s/h at the 'zon right now. I get mine this Monday.

An amp that spits out 1/3 watt @ 300 ohms will not only drive the HD6xx loud , but drive the 6xx effortlessly.

Is that what the Scarlett does or are you recommending I get an amp that will do that? Not sure if it's cause I'm a total noob or lack of info from focusrite but I can't find any sort of measurements for the preamp in the Scarlett.

I guess you are going to use the 6xx ( aka HD 650 ) primarily for mixing ? I cant find any specs pertaining to the 2i2's headphone amp. The headphone amp is not a strong point of 2i2. I dont think it has enough for the 6xx. Here are some links that might help ... https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/7lmeeo/hd6xxscarlett_2i2o2_amp_unnecessary/

I went all in and got the Massdrop x THX AAA 789 amp. I'm super excited but hoping the difference is worth the insane amount of money I just dropped instead of putting it into my PC haha. Only time will tell.

Good choice. The independent measurements of that amp show results way beyond its price. I hope you will enjoy the HD6xx + THX 789 combo. I was underwhelmed when I first got my 6xx. But after weeks of burn-in, my ears got used to it. I now greatly appreciate the great sound it brings. I'm glad i kept it.

You've got me stoked to hear these things in action haha. My amp is trailing behind the cans so I'll make sure I burn them in while I wait for the amp. Any recommendations for songs/ bands you think sound best with the 6xx's?

The HD6xx is not heavy on bass sound but the bass is there, just not enough to satisfy the hip hop crowd. 6XX tends to give equal emphasis to all the audible frequencies, maybe a little more on the mids to highs. So voices, instruments sound very clear, not drowned out by heavy bass. I tend to listen more to older music like Streisand, Depeche Mode, Metallica, Van Halen, Satriani, Linkin Park, etc ; to more recent once like Adele, Amy Wine house, etc.

Yes I have! It sounds absolutely fantastic. My only issue is that it just doesn't get loud enough unless I max out the gain knob. So I think I'm going to order balanced cables for my headphones to take advantage of the balanced output of the 789 and I think then I will be in heaven haha. Appreciate you check in!

Congrats, great to know that you are enjoying it. The 789 outputs 800 mW@300 ohms ( Balanced ) compared to 200mW (SE). Balanced is the way to go.
