Admittedly, this is my first foray into higher-quality headphones, so I don't have much to which I can compare. I was really hesitant to spend even this much (I know one can spend a lot more), but that said, I'm completely blown away by the sound quality here. I was initially disappointed after plugging them straight into my smartphone, but I knew I would be, and would need an amp to get the most out of them. I picked up an ES100 and played around with the settings a bit, and now realize what I've been missing for years. It's just a totally different experience. Music I've heard many times before is giving me chills with this setup, and I can't get enough!
I went ahead and picked up a DarkVoice as well, to have a dedicated tube amp setup at home (the ES100 travels well and produces great sound sourced from my smartphone, but I wanted to experiment at home). I am anxiously awaiting that to ship, and beyond maybe picking up a set of balanced cables, I'm hoping my audiophile collection is complete, at least for now. I fear I've opened a dangerous door here, and will end up spending way too much on this newfound interest, but for now at least, I have a comfortable, high-quality setup I feel I can be happy with for a long time.
+1 for the DarkVoice > 6xx setup. I'm listening to mine now. I have had it for about a year and haven't tired of it. I have experimented with a lot of other combos over the past year (my wallet has suffered). For me the DV/6xx combo is hard to beat. I enjoy my other options keep coming back to this as my favorite.
The ES100 is an excellent device as well. I've never used it directly with my 6xx, but have used it as a DAC/Pre-Amp for my DarkVoice with excellent results.
Be careful with the tube rolling. It can get costly quick. Also, an investment in balanced cables is a good idea of you pick up a balanced amp. IMO, the 6xx respond really well to additional power.
Excellent, thanks! I can't wait for it to ship!
Hi! Will you say the ES100 drives the 6XX to its full capability?
I use the ES100 with my HD 58X. I am considering getting the 6XX but only if it can be driven by a ES100 to the point that it will sound better than the 58X. (I know the differences are slight but I'm so curious and think I will appreciate the little bit of more detail)
No idea if you'll be able to tell a difference, but I think the ES100 is sufficient. I've run my 6xx's from other sources, providing limited comparisons, and have no complaints.
Okay, that's good. So, you've used the 6XX with f.ex a DarkVoice tube amp? And the ES100 is bringing the same or almost as good sound quality? I don't care about extremely small differences, but if the ES100 is giving the 6XX nearly the same sound quality as most amps that's important information. (Thank you for the reply I didn't see it before now)
