Gotta admit, when I first purchased these, I wasn't impressed. They were far too polite and unengaging. My main headphone at the time was an LCD-2f and I wasn't expecting it to be an upgrade, but I wanted to try a 650 out just to see what all the fuss was about. I was using a M2/M2 Schitt stack to drive them. For about 2 years they languished on my desk, rarely used and underappreciated.
I managed to get the THX AAA 789 amp a few months ago and decided to take the 6xx for a spin. It sounded like an entirely different headphone! The bass extended, the treble was far more present, and it felt like my music became much more alive! I always heard that the 650 scaled extremely well with better gear, but I never anticipated just how true that sentiment was.
Anyway, long story short, if you use this with an underpowered amp, expect a boring headphone that earns it's $200 price tag by virtue of it's technical abilities. But to get the most out of the 6xx, you got to feed it a high power, high quality signal. Then you can truly make it SING!
