What's the advantage of getting an amp and a dac versus something like Sound Blaster ZxR?
Also, how does ZxR perform with this set?
I don't have personal experience with the SB ZxR, so this is all just some thought and suggestions. The point of having an external powered amp is that a powered amp can provide more power. These headphones are rated at 300 ohms, so they do need some power to get loud. Usually, things like dac amp combos that are usb powered may not really get the 6xx to a suitable volume for you. I know my uDac 3 wasn't loud enough for me. Regarding external dacs, my limited experience is that starter dacs (lower budget dacs/ dac amp combos) are great if your motherboard solution is cheap or your motherboard solution picks up electrical noises. In those cases, it might help to get a dac. People say a more expensive dac (something like the Topping d50, Smsl SU-8) do help the 6xx a bit, but imo, the dac can be the least impactful upgrade depending on the current solution you already have.
Now, looking at the SB ZxR, it may work for you. If you already own the ZxR and you're planning on getting the 6xx, I suggest you listen use the headphones with the ZxR, then judge if you need more power/ amplification because you think the audio is quiet. It should also be noted that that the 6xx do scale with better gear. Things like a better dac and more powerful amp can help bring the headphone to it's fullest, and if you're into "fun" stuff, then things like tube amps and what not can make the headphone more "fun."
