Massdrop please. My wallet can't take it anymore. I literally just bought the HE4XXs last week and then you do this to me.
They sound good sometimes, and then sometimes sound muffled. I've got mix feelings about these headphones. Or maybe because it's Massdrop made. There's a reason why it's $200 dollars and I'm not impressed as people hype these headphones to be.
No, it's because you don't understand them.
It's the same drivers..
And what's your understanding of them?
I don't really think price plays a big role. After all, they are literally the HD 650's which sells for $300+. Sound has always been about personal preference. Maybe these just have a good sound signature that many people like. The 650's were very well received and well hey, now with the 6xx, they're even cheaper, who wouldn't like that? Again, it's all about preference. If you don't like the way they sound, then you don't. There's nothing wrong with that. When you say they sometimes sound good, they sometimes sound muffled, is it like the same track? different track? differen't output source?
I'm going to have to retract my opinion because it was based on listening to them on just the Dragonfly Red alone. Totally understand that certain track volumes are higher or lower. That plus low power equals muffled sound. Yes the real issue was listening to the cans underpowered. The Dragonfly Red does a descent job powering the HD6XX but itwas not enough. I just got the Schiit Magni 3 two days ago, and now I'm using the Red as the DAC and Magni to power them. The verdict, they sound fantastic. The sound is "Vibrant". The details in each instrument and voice sound full. Sorry all, I spoke too soon. They do sound good. Just make sure you have a good dac and amp. Two thumbs up.
No worries. That's usually the case with usb powered. I had a similar problem with the udac 3. A small portable dac, but for me, I just wanted them to be louder. Old tracks specifically, wow are they quiet xd.
