Probably the best headphones you can buy at $200
if you are looking for an enjoyable headphone. One that is pleasant and pleasing to listen to after a long day at work, just get a pair of these. I have had mine since the end of 2016. I was able to jump into the original drop of the HD6xx. I have bought several other headphones throughout this time and I always ended up with these.
the 6xx lacks quantity in bass, but it does not lack quality. it has enough for genres like Jazz, not enough for other genres though. I am currently powering my 6xx through the Massdrop Liquid Carbon and it just such a beautiful pairing. There is zero fatigue. the liquid carbon adds a bit of umph on the bass too.
these are great headphones for vocals. Male & female
After almost 3 years of buying and selling headphones, these are still sitting on my desk, because I have not found a better value than these anywhere

shenan24I listen to a lot of EDM, so bass is not extenuated.. You need a powerful amp, really really powerful, buy a pair of balanced cables and get yourself an amp which can use them. Then you'll feel their real power. That is why these headphones.. many say without a lot of power, usually around 750mW to 1KmW of power, you won't really feel them sing. Also the gain stage plays a huge role in these headphones. Just give your buying spree's some more time, you'll eventually get something w/ enough power to drive them, and then you'll be like.. where have you been all my life.

shenan24Just a little primer, you can mod these for more base by removing the grill and placing something like cotton, it thicker than cotton, over the outside middle hole. Then replace the grill on the outside.
Of course, the thicker the material the more bass. I do not recommend fully closing it off.

rkraigYou sent me down a dangerous road, friend... I was just aiming for Dragonfly Red when I got here, then I stumbled across Z Reviews when researching the Origen. Now all the sudden I'm saving up for the Schitt Jotenheim with an R2R 16-bit DAC.
This stuff is stupidly fun though, and it's something one can enjoy every freaking day.

Mark_MI don’t believe you will hear the difference, although the Micca doesn’t measure well. My main rig is Chord 2Qute + Violectric V281, I also own a micca Origen g2, when volume matched, I had great difficulty tell the two systems apart using the same headphone.

Xap1008Mighty bold statement, my rig clocks in $50 more than that (spent, not MSRP) and I would be shocked if anyone preferred the Origin. Not disputing it's a high yield device, but my Teac/Cayin combo is by far the best chain I've experienced(in my own home).

Xap1008Maybe "powerful endorsement" would have been a better choice of words, not trying to slight your preferences. I'm a firm believer that quality sound can be found at all price points.

shenan24Mine just arrived today and here is my set up: MacBook Pro - Pioneer Blu Ray Player - Schiit WYRD - Schiit Jotunheim - Balanced output to Surf balanced cables to Senn HD 6xx. Bass is quite good with my set up and I'm particularly impressed with the vocals including backup vocals plus Stevie's Hohner Clavinet which has a fair amount of bass on Talking Book.
The vinyl album using Senn's 598's is nearly identical but in a different setup with Schiit Mani and Schiit Asgard2. . Too difficult to differentiate. Just like the 598's, I am assuming the HD6xx will only get better. First impression is very good so far.

shenan24I've got the same set up. I dont get it! To me it was a waste of 579$. My main cans are AudioQuest Night Owls through a Cambridge Audio Dac/Amp . I really had high hopes!

DanTreviewThe range of voices/singer types has quite a bit of overlap but the singers at the extremes can be influenced by various peaks and dips in a frequency response. The frequencies that affect a Bass voice are not the exact same as those that affect a soprano. You get a dip in the upper mids and soprano vocals can sound thin, you get a boost in the lower mids and baritones/bass singers could be too chesty/thick. Overall the 650/6xx are fairly linear with no real spikes or major dips in frequency response, hence they work well with a higher variety of voice types. Really not sure what you "Laughed out loud" about.

ElectronicVicesYou didn't answer the question but just lectured me on the difference between male and female vocals. What headphones do you recommend for male only, and for female only? Since it makes a difference, I'm curious what you're thought on that is.
"LOL" because in 45 years of this, never once have I heard someone say they have a headphone that is superior for so-and-so's voice, but not someone else's voice (male or female), so if you have the answer, I'll retract the "LOL"

It's apparent you have an interest in being combative and narrow minded so I'm going to Mark Twain right out of this conversation.

ElectronicVicessame, I haven't heard as much, but the headphones like the Mr.Speakers AFO and the ZMF Auteur sounds better with males voices to me cause they have the impact that a usual male voice has and that does not match with a female voice.

shenan24Just heard the latest Rippingtons album at a press release yesterday, and it's all instrumental, and it's fantastic. So I'm curious - do the headphones that work best with male vocals (but not female vocals) work well for nylon string guitar attenuation? Or should I invest in a set of headphones that work well with female vocals? I just want to be sure because I don't know where Russ Freeman's guitar falls in its timbre and "frequency response" in terms of male vs. female headphones.

ElectronicVicesI heard a Dave Gilmour guitar solo, and the rhythm sounded great on my headphones but when he moved up the neck to play the solo, I think the frequency of the notes wasn't getting picked up by the headphones, and I remembered all this scientific proof about male vocals and female vocals, and so I was wondering: which headphones are best for guitar solos, but not for guitar rhythms? Because most solos are played in the higher ends of the register than rhythms, so I'm guessing the same phenomenon is at play as it is with headphones that are better/worse for male or female vocals. Thanks.

shenan24Since I'm not a verified owner here because I don't live in the USA, so I had to use a freight forwarder to buy for me, having said that, my first impression coming from the Denon AH-D2000 and AH-D5000 is, the hd6xx is very loud if an amplifier is used, as the Denons are 25ohm, I myself got used to an amazing clear and yet not loud sound on the Denons I mentioned.
Regarding impedance, note that the hd6xx is 300ohm, so, on my tests, at 0ohm to 64ohm the hd6xx lacks detail and everything else that the Denons have to spare as the hd6xx was not meant to be driven around this level, at 64 ohm to 300ohm is what the hd6xx really starts being detailed but as far as I can tell, it is unbearable to listen to on volume 100, you will get deaf if you do, to able to listen to this without getting deaf I had to reduce 30db on foobar 2000, at 300ohm to 600ohm is a just a tad higher but the loudness is not as unbearable as from 64ohm to 300ohm, I would recommend to listen to the hd6xx at 300ohm to 600ohm because that is where is very detailed with a rich sound all around and do not forget to reduce the volume, at 0ohm to 64ohm it does not need to reduce the volume, from 64ohm to 300ohm the volume needs at least 30db to be reduced, from 300ohm to 600ohm 35db.
The first 30 minutes listening to it gave me a terrible headache, they are too loud on volume at 100, and even if you listen to it for few seconds, it makes your ears to bleed. I used it always on equalizer off, hi-fi mode, so nothing to contradict my ears.
For now lets say that the Denon AH-D5000 is better than the Sennheiser HD6xx by how much will depend on how it will sound on my ears, lets see if the burn-in time makes any difference, it did on my Denons.
This review will be updated as it goes.
