I just got an email back from Sonarworks in regards to the difference in frequency response curves for the HD650 and HD6XX headphones they have calibrations for. Regarding the two headphones "There are few differences between them which is why we released a separate profile!" and from the overview on this drop: "In this revision, the driver structure and sound signature haven’t changed a bit. You’ll get the same smooth, laid-back presentation, with a balanced midrange and natural-sounding bass." I didn't pay $220 for a product that's almost the same sound signature that "hasn't changed a bit" with almost the "same smooth, laid-back presentation" Now I question whether this is a cheaper alternative because of cost reductions in manufacturing. I would like to be proven wrong. I was hoping for an identical product except for the cosmetic appearance.

This is something I've wondered about. Now that these headphones have been out in the wild for a few years, no one is really going to be properly comparing them to the HD650 to see if they are indeed identical except for the aesthetics. Most people probably just refer to the initial reviews that claim they sound the same. They could easily just start changing up components (i.e. reducing quality) in an effort to cut costs and none would be the wiser. Would love to see someone who's qualified compare the HD6XX and the HD650 today.

Of course they sound different! Sound reverbing on a gloss finish vs matte finish.
