I own the HE4XX and am considering purchasing these (especially since they are in stock). Any other HE4XX & 6XX owners care to chime in? I'm basically not sure if I should dive into these (which from a few reviews seem to be about equal to the HE4XX), or just save my monies for something like the Focal Elex, or LCD-2C's, or aeon flow.

slugmanIt really comes down to your taste. I have the HE4XX and HD6XX and like them both. One nice thing about the 6XX is how well they scale with better gear. I also have the Elex and enjoy them, very energetic, clear, with great punch. The LCD-2C are pretty good but I decided to sell them, I liked my other headphones better. I found the Aeons boring. If it's possible to test a variety of headphones at meetups or similar, that helps a lot. In my opinion you can't go wrong with the 6XX but your tastes may not match mine. For a budget amp, I think the CTH is great with both the HE4XX and the HD6XX.
slugmanI have an HE 400i and a Sennheiser HD 650 here. TL;DR – the HE 400i is more hyped, exciting headphone trying to “wow” you, while the HD 650 (and 6XX) plays the long game by trying to sound well-rounded. HE 400i isn't exactly the same sounding as the 4XX, but... it has circular earpads, a bit more of a V-shaped frequency response with accented bass and treble. The HE 400i never sounds “realistic” to me: as a consequence of the raised bass/treble, the mids (and therefore vocals and most instruments) are de-emphasized and feel less energetic. That said, if you are always using Bass Boost and EQ, this has some coloring built-in, and the “v-shape EQ” is something music engineers use in the studio to make people crank up the volume (because many people base volume off of vocals) for a “really rocking experience.” The headband, clamp force, and swivelling ear cups are immediately comfortable, though with longer wearing sessions I notice the weight and the headband pressing into my skin. HD 650 is a more liquid, natural (yet still a bit warm to my ears), “well-rounded/do everything well” headphone. It’s just warm enough not to be plain, but if it is your first HiFi headphone, you will be most impressed by the detail and the “full representation” of everything in a song. I agree with @loadexfa, the HD 650 shows better and better performance if you feed it with better gear. It is easy to get used to the signature, so that it disappears and you just pay attention to the music flowing through. It also has a much tighter clamp force at first, but it quickly settles (you can help it along by “springing” the metal headband extensions towards flat a few times – don’t try to kink the metal, just help it relax) and in the long run can be one of the most comfortable headphones due to the light weight and the way it settles to your head shape. I honestly have seen people enjoy both headphones, so I hope I described the traits enough that you can choose what appeals to your taste, even though my preference is probably clear 😅. I would also say the Cavalli Tube Hybrid (and other smooth, musical amps) are a good pairing for either, though you can go too far with a wet sound (Violectric amp + HD 650 = too wet for me! Violectric + Beyer might be good though, hmm never tried it!).

EvshrugThanks for the input. I've heard essentially the same thing about the 400i. Although from what it sounds like the classic 400's are where its at for bassheads, which may turn off some. I don't personally consider myself a basshead, but I do like a bass presence (I had to eq my K7XX's to get where I wanted them). I personally like the Bass coming from the CTH into my 4XX's. Interestingly the bass was turned down apparently in massdrops version. I can't confirm this but thats what the freq response graphs show (and massdrops description). Hopefully I can try out the 400i's sometime or some Sundara's for comparison. I really enjoy the planar sound in the 4XX's, which is why I was hoping to try another planar set of cans. I had my eye on Advanced Sound's Alpha 1.2 (1.0 is sold out), still something I may try out later. I've heard a lot of good things about these cans. I went ahead and made the jump. Can't wait to try these out. :)

loadexfaHmm, interesting. I also heard the LCD-2 (original version), is the better of the two. Have you ever had a chance to try those out? I would love to get my hands on the Focal Flex. Maybe in a month or so I can try these out. For now I decided on a dac upgrade (SMSL SU-8), and I decided to jump on the 6XX. Can't wait to try these out. As far as AMP's go, since I'm picking up the SU-8 I'd really like to try a balanced amp. I would love a THX 789, although from what I've read on audiosciencereviews the JDS atom is also very good (but as a budget amp non balanced). I personally however love my CTH. A lot of head-fi'ers have mentioned pairing it w/ an LPS, may eventually try that out. Too bad that the CTH isn't truly balanced. As far as meetups go, thats a great idea! I should get on that.

slugmanDidn’t know you already had a CTH, that’s cool! I could use my AKG K712 or K612 stock, but I did enjoy trying a little bass boost/EQ to kind of fill in the body. HD 6XX already has a nice balance of body to air IMO. I somehow forgot that you already had the HE 4XX, so you probably can describe it better than me! But don’t worry, I think the HD 6XX is different enough to make a good compliment... that’s the other reason to like the original HE 400 though, it was even less of an all-rounder and that actually made it more special. I only heard the HE 400 with the Velour (vegan?) pads, seemed to help me never experience treble issues I saw others mention, but I wanted to boost the mods even more with that model than the HE-400i (with hybrid “focus” pads) I have with me now. I really liked the HiFiman Ed X, HE-1000, Oppo PM2, and all the MrSpeakers planars! Well... the HE 560 and original Ether C were a little too laid back for my preferences. The balancing act is tough! I still like my HD 650 even alongside my HD 800 and vintage Stax, and I think that says something. Anyway, enjoy another step in your audio journey!
loadexfaI use the meetup app, I should look for (or start) a meetup group for Pittsburgh headphone enthusiasts (since everyone hates the connotations of “audiophile”). Thanks for the idea!

slugmanSame disclaimers about varying taste, etc etc ... IMHO, you can't do any better than the CTH for the 6XX in the sub $500 price range. A really good match. Even works well with the HD 800, especially with the Amperex 7308 tube (adds more detail). Don't bother with the Amperex for the 6XX, doesn't really make a difference from what I could hear. I wouldn't worry too much about balanced, I would urge you to focus on how well a particular amp and dac pair with your headphones. Some really good amps are not balanced. I'm a little weird, I didn't like the THX 789 (I know, everyone else loves it). I found it harsh, sometimes fatiguing, and sold it. Never tried the original LCD-2 so I couldn't say much. When I first purchased my LCD-2c I loved them. Over time I purchased additional headphones that filled my needs/tastes better which is why I sold the LCD-2c. I try to force myself to sell what I don't use. I did still like the LCD-2c. Glad you like the meetup idea, it can save a lot of time and money in the long run, depending on what local people may have.

EvshrugYou're welcome regarding meetups! I hope you find a lot of good gear in your area to try. :)
loadexfaI used to organize small meets in my city (Pittsburgh) co-sponsored by a store that sold high end headphones (and speakers), they shared their mailing list with me so I could let people know it was happening. It was obviously good for the store to have enthusiasts share good times and more gear variety, haha! That store stopped carrying headphones though, sadly. I still go to other events like CanJam and most recently AXPONA, so I’ve heard a LOT of gear, but I love making friends with shared interests :) I hope you also have enjoyed your journey!
