Pros: Sound quality is awesome. More soundstage than my 599s. Cons: Would have preferred the longer cord with 6.35 mm (1/4 in) termination. You're not going to be driving these with your "smart" phone, so what were they thinking, here? Clamp force is pretty tight, although it can be helped, but I don't like the idea of feeling like I'm going to tear them up trying to fix a design flaw. That's why I bought the insurance for. I STRONGLY recommend you do too. Iffy: Sound is a bit warmer than my 599s, but the mids are recessed, and the overall sound is less detailed, and less sparkly. I like the increased bass amount. It even makes my brain feel like it's rattling inside my head. It's not very punchy, though. Not too boomy, but more so boomy than punchy. I wasn't expecting the gains in bass to require such a drastic sacrifice in all other areas. Vocals are nothing compared to my 599s, and I might even prefer their sound to these. We'll see how they sound once my DarkVoice arrives. Recommend?: For ~$200, yes. These are mostly enjoyable to listen to. They have a more relaxed sound for those not looking to pay close attention to their music. However, I think other brands beat them in the areas they're seeking after gains. Sennheiser should just stick to making good Sennheisers, and let the rest do what they do best. Edit: I take back what I said about not being able to drive them with a smart phone. Mine are plenty loud in a quiet environment using my Nexus 6P. So, I guess, you can drive them with a smart phone, after all. Post-Focal Edit: You only live once. Get the Focal Elex. Trust me. It's better in almost every way, and worth the money. The 6xx sounds like a cheap imitation of it. Be patient, and save your money.

sephulaIt's interesting what you said about soundstage. Most people say HD6-series have much narrower soundstage than HD5-series. I own 599, which I got for 90$ brand new and your review got me wondering if 6XX is a worthy upgrade...?

mike30The HD6xx series all have larger drivers. The bass is more plentiful. Sounds like you're sitting in a room. Feels more enveloped. However, I think the 599s have a cleaner, and more forward sound. Like, you're the microphone. The 6 series continues that, but is overall, more laid back. For only $200ish, I think it's worthwhile. I'm still adjusting to them, personally. Overall, I think I may prefer the 6xx, but I'd say it's pretty close. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. Both have a slightly veiled sound. Using WASAPI Exclusive Mode with a good DAC/Amp, and no filters does help alleviate that. I like the bigger sound of the 6xx, but I also like the clean, crisp, transparent sound of the 599s. I'm only running them off an Asus Essence STX II with the stock Muses. We'll see which performs better when my Drop orders arrive... Sometime around Christmas. I'm waiting on a D70 and THX AAA 789. I think the neutrality of the combination will help the HD6xx, because the headphones already color the sound a little. Off of the Muses, they're a little too lush for my taste. Edit: Actually, the more back and forth listening tests I perform, the more I'm certain that like the 6xx better. The 599s are kind puny sounding by comparison. High pitched. Anemic. They are noticeably cheaper sounding. The 6xx is a lot more comfortable to listen to. I'm kinda anxious to try the 660s, now. However, I'm going to save up for Focals.
