Well this is fun! My wonderful son gave me these for my Christmas present. Looking forward to enjoying them. I'm excited as I find my taste in headphone sonics has mellowed over the years, from Grado 80s to AKG 701s to HE4XXs and now we'll see what these are like.

MonetsChemistAfter receiving my beyerdynamic Amiron Home yesterday and not loving their lack of sparkle up top, an eBay seller who sold me a pair of T90 Jubilees (which I also received yesterday) told me to try the Grado SR80e. Do you recommend them? By the way, did you happen to like the HD 6XX? Nice gift!

raansire7Hello Raansire7, First of all, my apologies for the slow response. The HD6xx package just arrived today. The trip from the US to Canada is fairly slow, despite being expedited post. I don't believe it's particularly related to customs processing, either; it just seems to take a very long time to go through DHL who is the intermediary shipper. Aaaaaanyway I am just in my first 5 minutes of listening - Nils Frahm, All Melody, 96/24 - so it wouldn't be fair to be critical, but so far I like what I hear. They look great; I really like the Massdrop dark blue and black. They fit well, though I can understand how some might think them too snug. Being used to my 4xx phones now I would say they feel roughly the same, though lighter. As to the Grado SR80s - I bought them a long time ago, probably about 2005 or so. The dealer that sold them to me let me listen to a range of phones on the same preamplifier headphone out that I had (still have) at home, a Linn Kolektor. Bear in mind that this was well before the headphone boom; as Wes Phillips noted in his Stereophile review of the AKG 701s in 2006, "If you're among the audiophiles who sneer at those of us who like headphones..." I recall trying a Sennheiser phone as well as the Grado, and I chose the Grado because its extra sparkle and zing really appealed to me. The Senn, in contrast, didn't seem as exciting. The Grados travelled with me to France for a year and then back home to Canada. By then I wanted something better, so I ordered a pair of AKG 701s from somewhere, Amazon maybe. At first I liked the AKGs because I knew they were better. But you know, I still had this secret love for the Grados. However, one thing I definitely disliked by this time about the Grados were the foam ear pads. They're hot and scratchy and generally unpleasant. For anyone thinking of Grados, I'd read this article on InnerFidelity about the different pad options. Eventually, as I got to know the AKGs better, I realized that they actually did sound better than the Grados; what I enjoyed about the Grados was their exaggeration. In the article mentioned above, Tyl Herstens says "To my ears, Grados generally have two faults: the bass lacks authority; and there's a harsh spot in the low-treble around 2kHz". What he calls "harsh" seems more like a sometimes pleasant, sometimes aggravating boost to me. But as he also states in the same article, basically YMMV. Fast forward to today - one of my daughters has my Grados now (and also hates the earpads, but is OK with the sound); my wife has my AKGs, but finds they are a bit too big and too loose for her head; I have HE4xx that I really, really like; and now we have the HD6xx, which are still sounding quite fine... I use Schiit Magni 3 as my headphone amplifier, both on my desktop and in the main stereo. My desktop DAC is a Bifrost 4490; my main stereo DAC is a Drop Airist R2R. I also have a Schiit Fulla 2 that I use for travelling, and a Fulla 1 and DragonFly that I don't really use anymore. I hope this helps!
