thinking about getting these. i would be using these for music via my phone and at home plugged into stereo, as well as video games / movies via PS4. i have a Fiio Q1 Mark II dac/amp for my DT770 80ohm. Will this power these? seems from what i can tell, the 3.5mm plug won't enough, but the 2.5mm will or get closer. for the PS4, it seems like maybe the SoundBlaster x G6 might work? i'm still somewhat new to all this so any help is appreciated. Anyone have any other suggestions? Maybe this will help someone else as well decide on what equipment needed. ✌😎

Erock541I have a Q1 Mk II and it works great with the HD 6XX, esp when using a balanced 2.5mm cable. For the PS4 scenario, I ended up using my TV's optical out into a Topping DX3 Pro.

Erock541I would think the Q1 wouldn’t be enough for the HD 650 (the Q5 certainly is! Love the sound of that), but if @LuckyLuke575 has actually tried it and likes it, and if you already have it anyway, go ahead and try. If you plug the FiiO into the PS4’s USB port, that should work! The soundblaster G6 is a stronger amp, not exactly my favorite but most people wouldn’t be able to tell what I nitpick about. Let’s just say I wouldn’t use SoundBlaster products with Beyer headphones. However, the value add from the G6 is that you can certainly make it loud enough, and for gaming you get a ring of surround sound from the PS4 if you connect through Optical and use Dolby Bitstreaming in PS4 settings. 7.1 surround is much more immersive and competitive than stereo, though some people prefer regular headphone 2.0 stereo for music (for that direct, ”in your head” feeling, it’s personal preference). You can also plug in a $5 lapel mic into the G6’s mic input for chat purposes. Hope this helps! I like your idealism in your last sentence, but I’ve been dropping tips and advice since 2009 (check out my YouTube channel, same name, I’m all about gaming with headphones!), and I’m sure someone else will ask a similar question in a week or less 😂

EvshrugWhy wouldn’t you use the G6 w/ beyers? I have a pair of DT770 80ohm... think I read on reddit that the Q1 won’t work via usb on the PS4, but then again, I haven’t tried yet. edit: also, these vs 58x?

Erock541Well, everyone’s ears are different right? Smaller canals like mine actually resonate with basically right where the Beyer treble peak is, so it sounds uncomfortably loud there for me. I have found stock Creative amps, from the E1 to the X7 (I reviewed a BUNCH of them on head-fi, years ago, because I think their surround DSP is quite good), to generally have a bit of glaring treble emphasis, and an overall somewhat thin-bodied sound. It was as if their design was to compensate for Creative’s warm (and somewhat muddy) headphones in the past. I almost always added some midrange to compensate, but the treble was still there, even in what was their flagship X7. I got a full Burson opamp upgrade which greatly sweetened the sound, which made me wish all of their amps had swappable opamps. And even stock I didn’t hate it, on the contrary I used (and reviewed) their gear for years, but it just didn’t have that rich sound I heard on really high end setups. I don’t precisely know if the Q1 will work or not... my FiiO E10k does, Bluewave GET does (actually seems like a more powerful amp than the G5 and E5 I have), and generally it seems DACs that don’t need drivers usually work on the PS4. I would say the HD 6XX is the better music headphone and better headphone overall, if you play them on an idea setup and compare side by side. But with a little amp, and just listening to them by themselves, the HD 58X might be the stronger value. It’s not much louder BUT noticeably less picky to amplify, better with small amps. The sub bass extends deeper, for a more modern, exciting sound without sounding like a basshead’s headphone (bass doesn’t overpower the rest of the spectrum, but the deepest “atmospheric” notes are easier to hear than is perhaps realistic). The HD 58X Jubilee might perform more like you want it to while still providing high fidelity (it belongs as part of theHD 600 series above the HD 599 and HD 598, though it’s the entry-level option of the HD 600 series). So, I think you could get the HD 58X, and it might sound better than the HD 6XX on a modest or portable setup. 👍
