These really do keep popping to mind all the time (guess drops emails nagging me work?). But are they going to be a new and different or even better experience compared to the Hifiman HE-400i, Meze 99, and Audio Technica MSR7? Or am I still just side-grading? I'm sure the signature is slightly different as it is between the others and I can tell the difference...but is it worth it? Hmm

tom_mHow are the Meze 99? I’m thinking of picking up a pair of closed back in addition to the he 6xx. As far as HE 400 vs hd 6xx, I’d recommend you look up HD 650 vs HE 400 on YouTube as there are many reviews detailing the Differences.

tom_mThey are closest to the HE-400i probably. I personally prefer the 6XX to the Hifimans, but overall sound quality is probably in a similar tier. If you like music created by real humans and instruments as opposed to electronic instruments, the Sennheisers are probably a good upgrade. They are right up there with the best headphones (even at 10x the price) when it comes to timbre representation and vocals. They are a lot better than the Meze 99 Noir unless bass and high treble is your thing. I have only heard the MSR7 for a short period of time, but I would put the 6XX above them easily as well.

DoctorRIf you like the mid-centric sound on the 6XX, I'd avoid the Meze 99. Mine have a lot of bass to the point of boomy regardless of pads and very recessed mids, which affect all but the highest registers of female vocals, and cause the treble they have to sound quite thin. I'm experimenting with alternative pads for the Mezes (small, large Meze pads, Brainwavz, several pads from M50, and will be able to try Momentum 2 pads soon) but so far nothing has really made much of a difference. I do quite like the build, feel, and comfort of the Meze 99s (at least, with bigger pads - the stock pads are quite uncomfortable for me). I have just ordered an E-MU Teak as an attempt to find a better (mostly) closed alternative.
