Awesome
These headphones are replacing my old Sennheiser HD 280 Pro closed-back cans. I thought those sounded pretty good, but these are a huge leap above that. The sound quality is great and the I'm really enjoying the spaciousness of the open-back design (my first set of open-backs). I decided to create a dedicated CD listening station, so I could really unplug from everything else and focus on an album listening experience. Using an old Sony Blu-ray player as the transport, and powering the headphones with a Schiit stack (Modi 3+ and Magni Heresy) is a great combo.

hypnoticdcimeYou just need to find a DVD or Blu-ray player that has a digital out port (Toslink or coaxial). Those will usually bypass the internal DAC. So at that point you are really just using the player to read the disc and output the digital info to the output port (where your own DAC can then handle it). The Sony model I have here can still be found at Best Buy for around $70 or so. It probably isn't as good of a solution as a dedicated CD transport or player, but it works for me (at least until I can get a proper CD player).

hypnoticdcimeNo, the display is optional. It makes it tough since my Blu-ray player has no display on it for track numbers and such, but I also have an HDMI cable from it running to my computer. So, I can turn off my computer speakers and just just the screen for displaying the track info when playing a CD on it, if I want to, but it isn't required.

mkizerI don't know about the HDMI converters, but in the articles I read (just search Reddit for "blu-ray as cd transport" and you'll find a bunch) most of the comments said that the HDMI out wasn't a good choice (I forget exactly why). I believe that the consensus is that digital coaxial is the best option, followed closely by Toslink optical out.

hypnoticdcimeI have a Technics turntable from the early 1980s. It's packed away as I only have a small amount of vinyl. I really prefer CDs or over vinyl, except for the physical size of the LP...artwork and liner notes are much nicer in that format.

mkizerBlack or very dark background in sound is just another way to say no noise as in vision black is no light. I know you knew that...Thank you.... A warm, mellow, excessively rich quality in reproduced sound.

hypnoticdcimeI haven't tried a ton of headphones. I had stuck with my Sennheiser HD 280 Pros for 10+ years. Only replacing them with the 6XX pair because I really wanted to dive into open-back and higher quality. I really enjoy how these sound, but I'm sure I'll experiment with some other models at some point. I'd say that the 6XX certainly are worth the money.
