I know that these would be a lot better with amplification, but could these work with just a smartphone or laptop?
Yes, would just sound more quiet and less detailed by a little.
They will work, and some things will drive them loud, but they will sound insipid, especially in the bass. I'm still struggling with the logic of a default 3.5mm, as the HD650 generally sucks out of portable amps, much less out of phones.
Okay, I'm extremely tempted to get a pair, but I am very new to the audio scene, and have not (nor do I have the money to purchase these and one) purchased an amp of any sort.
I agree. Should keep as a 6.5 mm since it is not easily powered and does best with a desktop amp. Don't really mind snapping on an adaptor piece, but seems a silly choice. I'd rather have 6.5 and you can buy a cheap grado adator cable if you need to go 3.5.
1/8 to 1/4 is less clunky than the other way around and probably 80%-90% of the people who join this drop don't own a headphone amp. Same reason the HD600 is terminated in 1/8th with a 1/4th adapter.
The stock HD650 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adaptor is excellent, and not clunky at all- it's a short tail that takes the strain off the socket, too- unlike the adaptor provided here.
People would probably be better off picking up a stock 650 cable (which are available cheaply) than using that adaptor- and in any case, there aren't many devices that have a native 3.5mm out that will drive these headphones properly. Loud? Yes. Properly? Not so much.
There are far better choices, if you don't own a desktop headphone amp. If you do own one, or are prepared to pick one up, however- this is a very cool drop indeed; you're making one of the best deals in audio even better :)
I have owned the HD650 for about two years, it will work fine out of a phone or laptop. It won't sound 100% but it's still incredible. My crazy tube amp only makes them a little better. Still worth the money without the amp
Meh I'm cool with 3.5mm, cant see the big deal here. What if some one own a mojo or similar devices? 3.5mm to 6.3 is definitely more convinent in my book. period.
Then they are free to enjoy how crappy the 650 sounds out of the Mojo.
Yes, I fell for the Chord kool-aid too, and tried to drive 650s out of my Mojo. It really doesn't do the HD650 justice at all. These days, the Mojo is reserved for my IEMs or HD-25s, and the HD650s for desktop amps that don't make them sound bland and lifeless. The Mojo sounds pretty good through a decent pair of IEMs, for the record.
Thank you for referring me to this page! I love reading about new headphones and especially high-end ones like so!
