Is the Asus XONAR STX II good enough to pair with these or should I be looking at standalone options? I'm not really a fan of them as I hate clutter on the desktop but I'd like to keep an open mind.
I have the asus stx and it handles my 250ohm headphones just fine.
Good enough, according to many posts on head-fi.org. I've the ST. Certainly more than enough power for the HD 650. The card's TPA6120A2 is a capable headphone amp chip, PCM1792A a very good DAC. The socketable opamps on the STX give you a flexibility most standalones don't offer. Line outs are excellent if you decide to go with a stand-alone head amp down the road, you won't do discernibly better than the STX DAC without spending quite a bit.
