The HD650 are officially discontinued, so there's no more MAP. Hence this great deal
I wonder what Sennheiser has in store for us in the future :D

dleblancMaybe HD 651, the 500 series of their headphones are redesigned supposedly just in appearance and the HD 598 is now HD 599.

dleblanchmm. I think Sennheiser is actually going to move to a different naming scheme. They have already done so for their lower-end products. (CX300,400 earbuds are now CX 3.00 and 4.00 and were redesigned, same with HD 400 series are now HD 4.20 and HD 4.30)

dleblancWhere is your source that these are now "officially discontinued"? Google isn't bringing up any results on this but a few speculative threads from 2015. Plus they're still available on Sennheiser's official website. So?

dleblancThere is no source that says that the HD 650s are discontinued. Can you post any links to prove your point?
A color change could be a possibility and an additional naming change.

dleblancI work in an audio boutique, and when we inquired about any promotional prices for our store because of the HD6XX sale, the Canadian rep told us it's now disco. I've also worked at the Salon Son & Image for Sennheiser, so I know him very well as a friend :)

dleblancthat's just one canadian rep, that's not all of sennheiser sales or production
as for new stuff, a lot of new crap has came out since hd800, and all they do is make a new orpheus and hd800s
people say sweet spot is hd650 because beats target the same pricce point because hd650 was that same price point, so it's not really because hd650 is the right price, but then eventually it was because of hd650
but still, 200 dollar is a better deal, ad900 k601 are both miles better than the 300 dollar experience of anything out there, also you can ebay off some rando k501 k240df

dleblancWhile it is still possible that Sennheiser has a replacement for the HD650 in the near future, they are still one of my favorite headphones.
I have heard a lot of headphones and consider myself a audio enthusiast. I tried Everything from HD598 to HD800 and know what differs them from another. I have also listend to many other headphones and appreciate the differences.
Now there is a certain thing that botheres me. When I listen to different DACs and AMPs the differences between them are minimal or not apparent and I wonder if it is just me or the entire industry is full of snake oil. I hear the differences between tubes and regular amps, but other than that a Fiio E10k and a jds labs objective2 odac sound somewhat very similar. I hear the difference between headphones clearly, but thats absolutely not the case if an amp or a dac has reached a certain quality like the Fiio E10k. Has anyone had that same experince ?

CapyrYeah, I definitely agree on diminishing returns, even with the 650. I can hear differences, but they become very nuanced once you have a DAC and amp of sufficient quality - O2/ODac is about that point really. I've listened to some higher end stuff as well, Perreaux and Burson headphone amps mated to nuForce, Perreaux, Grace Dacs - yeah, they do sound better, but maybe like .. 5-10% better? Just a little better on the details, a little easier to distinguish instrument separation.
I've said for a long time that at as long as the DAC is capable of handling the source material with low noise and low distortion, and the amp has enough power to control the speaker or headphone, at least 75% of the differences in sound between two systems is the speaker or headphone, and I stand by that statement 100%.

spronkGreat to hear from someone who had a similar experience. I have the strong impression, that most of the statements on head-fi regarding DACs and AMPs are based on placebo effects. It's a shame that there are so few people telling the truth and not speaking in superlatives to compare audio gear.

CapyrI also feel the same way about Amps and DACs. My understanding is that an Amplifier is there to push more power to the headphone, while the DAC's job is to convert the digital signal to analog. My understanding is that as long as both are doing those jobs well, that's all you need. I honestly couldn't tell you if I notice a difference or not between much of the gear- my Magni 2 has never had a problem driving any headphone i've used it with, and I use the Modi 2 because my laptop has a shitty soundcard.
As far as placebo and snake oil on head-fi goes, you will find people who swear by their $500+ cables on head-fi, even though it has been shown that there is no functional difference between a coat hanger and said $500+ cable, except that it looks nice.

Tman450Was there a particular reason for you to choose the Magni 2 and Modi 2 oversomething like a Fiio E10k ? I'm thinking about getting the Schiit combo for my setup. Thanks for your help.
