Observer1000I will say, I got a pair of 6XXs, but yet when I saw that 400i deal, my wallet shot right the f**k out of my pants and hit my computer with a thud. I daresay that is consolation.

BjordI must admit, it is a fantastic deal! Just wanted to push his buttons a little hahaha, not trying to mean any harm. I may have gone for the Hifiman HE 400i if I didn't get the HD 6XX.

jforce713Hey, just a comment. I received the Hifiman HE 400i headphones today, Amazon prime delivers on Sundays.
Not to take anything away from the Sennheiser HD 6XX but these headphones are really in a whole other world of sound reproduction. I have the Philips X2 and the AKG 701 phones to compare these planar to.
The Hifiman HE 400i planar phones are just a "Beast". Simply put, the sound spectrum is "MAGNIFICENT".
Just wait until you hear the planar magnetic bass, mid-range and highs.
You made a wise decision in ordering your set. You will not be disappointed.

Observer1000Haha, got mine yesterday, and yeah they are beastly in the best way! I've been putting them on the ears of everyone I know. I'm impressed, everyone is instantly impressed. They're my first planars and I am very happy. Good on ya for getting them too, very worthwhile purchase! Still looking forward to my 6XXs though. But these... oh man they smell and feel like a new Audi.

Observer1000I have both the 400i and the HD650s (have owned both of them for years, got the 400i on release) - I don't think they're comparable. The 400i are not dark, their highs are sparklier, they're not particularly bright but they're definitely not as dark as the 650s. They're also not very bassy, it is planar bass but they're just "okay" there, not on Audeze LCD-2/3/4 level of quantity nor quality but they're still very fast. Mids are way lusher on the 650s, they're more laid back though the Hifimans aren't particularly aggressive either.
I like the 400i for classical ensembles, the HD650 outclass them (in my opinion) with almost everything else, especially vocals. Planars are fun, I love them (own Audezes, several Hifimans, ZMFs, etc.), but these two particular ones I'd still sway toward the 650s almost exclusively. $250 for the 400i is already a great deal though, especially if you prefer their sound signature and/or want to try planar magnetics.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I DID BOTH CAUSE IM NOT A LAZY ___________. I ALSO WAS UP DOING THINGS UNTIL 4AM ET ON NOV8 AND I STILL WOKE UP ON TIME AND GOT EVERYTHING DONE AND POSTED A PERFECT BALLOT WITH EVERY CHOICE RESEARCHED..... GET ON MY LEVEL!
