Since we now seem to have knowledgeable members viewing and commenting, my questions are:
Is the Schiit Modi multibit an R2R design?
If so, why is the pcb design so different from the other examples of R2R DACs shown below?
Are the similiar looking DAC design far superior to a Modi multibit?

HeavyboxerYes, the modi Multibit is R2R, but all the circuit is inside a chip. The discrete ladder looks much better. I think there’s more control for the manufacturers by using a discrete one, but that also means that there’s more room for error. I would evaluate it in a case by case basis and not by a generalization.

HeavyboxerSchiit multibit dacs use industrial dac chips, whereas other companies like MSB, Rockna, Audio-gd, Metrum, Denafrips, Holo Audio etc. all use discrete components, meaning that the DAC is designed from the ground up. Both approaches have their own pros and cons, but ultimately the implementation is what matters.

bunkbailSounds like you guys know your stuff.
1 unrelated question : why are tube amp output rated the opposite of solid state amps? I thought higher resistance meant less power output yet ratings on this site (for my littledot mk2 and darkvoice at least) show more power as ohm load is higher?

HeavyboxerHey Heavyboxer, good question!
One advantage of a discrete design is the relative flexibility. As other users have noted, discrete circuits are designed from the ground up. This allows us to customize the circuit according to our particular needs. It gives us more control over the details of the conversion such as bit depth, clocking, reconstruction filtering, etc. The RDAC is 24 bits, with reclocking implemented in the bottom board and a second order reconstruction filter on each channel.

bunkbailI thought multibit is the first Schiit Dac that is not Delta Sigma.

UNOEIt is not delta sigma, but it still uses industrial dacs from analog devices, and the ones not for audio use at that. they are tailored to industries with critical use, like medical or military use or something. i mean, if they manage to make them work for audio, who cares, right? even if they measure like shit.
