Irrespective of the IP controversy... December? I'm not going to put up $350 for 6mths to get a $10 credit and some cheap cables. MD really needs to figure out a way to reduce these lead times to no more than 3 mths
dasmanWhat would you propose for a completely custom item that's being manufactured specifically for anyone that jumps in on the drop? It's the nature of custom products to have to wait for them. I this case, since it's a first timer, you're also looking at time to debug the production line to make sure you get a quality product in the end. I say "take your time and get it right" personally.
If you're just looking for something to squelch your internal rabid consumer, this is really not the site for you.
HeeftyI've participated in 25 drops at this point, and waited for the HD6xx, CTH and LCx... So I know what MD is all about.
And... I know about custom, small business, build to order. I waited for my custom ZMF headphones and I am waiting for my custom Amp and Sound head amp now. Those are custom. This DAC is not custom... This DAC is a new product that a company (massdrop) is bringing to market.
Since taking part in the HD6xx, LCx and CTH drops I've come to realize that I have better things to do with my cash than front MD the money to bring something into production. This isn't Kickstarter (where I expect to wait and take a risk)
I would propose that MD get the product far enough into production that they open the drop 3 mths away from delivery, rather than 6+ months. I agree they need to take their time and get it right, but on their dime. If the goal is that we're supposed to look at MD Made as crowd funding, then fine... make the incentives worthwhile.
The cable and credit just aren't an incentive (for me) to join this drop. If the final product is as good the pre-production units, then I'll pick one up when it becomes a regular Massdrop Made item (ie, like the HD6xx and CTH).
dasmanOh, not me-- I'd be willing to wait twice as long for the Rose Gold version!!!
Kidding of course. Yeah, six months is quite a long time and when one considers the rapid rate of development in electronics/audio/computers etc.., it's entirely possible you may end up taking delivery of a "Classic" piece of technology, rather than the cutting edge component this thing claims to be. And of course, there's always the bit about first production run fuck ups and the inevitable V2's and V3's to follow.

"And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in the silent water
Under the rocks, and stones there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself, "My God! What have I done?”
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in to the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up
Time isn't after us
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Once in a lifetime
Letting the days go by
Letting the days go by"
dasmanIt's custom *for Massdrop* and they are running what is essentially a pre-order group buy to get the funds to have the thing made. It's kind of like a kickstarter in a sense.
BlueCrowned"Custom for Massdrop"... like Soekris 1321 DAC is custom for Soekris? or... Schiit Lyr3 is custom for Schiit? or... you get the point. This is a new product, for what is now an established company.
A "pre-order group buy to get the funds to have the thing made" isn't "kind of like kickstarter"... it is exactly like kickstarter.
And my point is that there isn't enough reward here for the risk. Either the "first-adopter" price needs to be significantly lower, or they need to significantly reduce the timeline.
RayFThis happened to me with both the PS audio sprout and the NobleX (with the wiz tuned version)
I guess that's the nature of the beast though, the sprout still gets used daily and the nobles are now collecting dust with the rest of the iems :O
SlobloIt's true--the curse of early adoption is often early retirement.
And like cliff diving in Acapulco, it's better to observe some activities from the sidelines, before deciding to jump in...
