Last year, we teamed up with AKG on the K7XX, a Massdrop-configured edition of the highly regarded 65th Anniversary K702. Featuring its predecessor’s legendary sound and build quality—with a bass boost, matched transducers, and improved comfort—the K7XX was a big hit with the Audiophile Community. As positive feedback poured in, so did one recurring request: Could we add a custom colorway to make the black-on-black aesthetic really pop? AKG was happy to oblige, and we launched a poll to determine which color to include in the next limited batch. More than 3,600 votes later, red came out on top, with blue and vintage black/gold not far behind. The final product boasts a Ruby Red accent ring, stitching, and rods (RAL 3003, to be exact).

Using the same dynamic driver technology as the K702 65th Anniversary Edition, these open-back headphones have been tweaked to deliver an extended frequency response and a wide, locationally specific soundstage that puts you closer to the source than most cans. The highs were boosted by an innovative flat-wire voice coil, the mids were brought up to better balance the range, and the lows were jacked up by 3 dB for fully immersive sound imaging. To make sure that the channels are synced up and balanced, each transducer is individually tested and paired to a transducer with the closest possible sound signature. To see just how well the channels match, look at the below graph featuring an overlay of each driver's frequency response.
Built with comfort in mind, the adjustable leather headband and memory foam earpads can be worn for hours at a time without fatigue. AKG removed the bumps that come standard on their headbands, giving you a fully smooth surface. To set the K7XX (even further) apart, the inside of the frame features the Massdrop logo on one side and the serial number on the other. Completing the package, the nearly 10-foot cable is detachable and can be easily replaced if the need arises.
