One trick pony
I really wanted to like these headphones. It should be noted that I like efficient closed-back headphones with that old-school monitor sound. To me, both the highs and lows are lacking but they do have a spacious vocals-forward midrange. I tried these with my laptop, smart phone, tablet, Bellari HA 543, THX AA 789, with and without the Grace SDAC, which I also tried with and without the Bellari. Blah. Blah. In short, I tried them with about everything I have without digging old kit out of closets, attics, the garage. A friend comes over and listens to music with me. She is a dental hygienist and has high frequency hearing loss due to exposure to the whine of dental tools. She absolutely loves the AKGs. But I don't think she knows what she is missing. With that said, they still have value. Because she is a friend and she likes them. As for me, as a last resort I plugged these into my Denon receiver, AVR-X4400H, which is fed by an OPPO UDP-203. The real superstar in this set-up is the OPPO. Anyhow, the AKG-7xx's really came alive in this arrangement when listening to Mozart, it truly made the classical soundstage come alive. Segue, at first I thought my neighbors called the police on me do to music listening volume. Then, after a few times, I realized it is due to content. They do not bother me if I am listening to pop or classical loudly. As soon as I put in gangsta rap or industrial, it is flashing lights and po-po at the door. With that said, these headphones do nothing for me that my stereo or other headphones can't do better. I keep them for the enjoyment of a friend. Anything that I would listen to on these, that music sounds better over my stereo. As open backs, they aren't portable and I cannot use them in the workplace. My last couple comments are, I do not like the clamp force, which is way too light -they constantly feel like they're going to fall off. They move around too much on my head. Lastly, I think these headphones could really benefit from a balanced input. But although the cable is detachable it is a single sided 3-pin on the left side. I think there are youtube vids that show someone how to modify this. Doubt I will go there. In short, to me they're are a limited one-trick pony I keep around for guests. I don't like the way they sound or fit.

AugustSkyeThese lack the speed. If these things were faster and the clamp force wasn't so annoying to my ears after a couple of hours of use, it would be such an amazing pair of headphones. They're great for gaming, with the large soundstage but it's a bit too large combo with the slowness of the bass making it sound pretty subpar when listening to music. I really wanted to like them too, I actually did the bass mod for it but I still cannot get past the slowness of these headphones.
