I have a pair of Dt990-250ohms. How do these compare, as I want to give the 990's to my son. Thanks, Dylan
I own the K702 (and can guestimate the sound of the K7XX from it), and I've heard the DT990 250ohm on several occasions. The K702 has weak bass impact, and from what I'm reading the K7XX has improved on it, but don't expect significant power from it (it's probably closer to neutral now rather than rolled off).
The K7XX and DT990 are complementary in a collection. The DT990 is a VERY colored, dark hp. The K7XX should sound more neutral but with much clearer highs and a more controlled bass. The sound is better suited for female vocals, jazz, rock, and classical, whereas the DT990, while inaccurate, is more fun to listen to, especially for electronic music. You will probably find yourself wanting to swap with your son from time to time, but chances are he will prefer the DT990.
Are you saying the DT990's are dark?
They're bright as hell and incredibly V-shaped.
I still say the DT990 is very dark to my ears (I've only heard the 250 ohm btw). I also should have mentioned I'm not comparing with just the K702 when I say they sound dark. I also have the HD800 and LCD2v2 and the DT990 is definitely darker than them. (edit: ok, maybe not the LCD2, but I recall the high-mids sounding recessed which gave it an overall very colored, low end emphasis)
I have the 250 ohm version of the DT990. It was too bright for me when plugged into my O2 DAC and amp combo. When I use the DT990 with my Little Dot MK IV having stock tubes, however, the harshness is completely gone and the DT990 sounds very nice.
I must say, this is actually the first time I've ever seen anyone describe the DT990 as dark lmao.
I guess everyone hears differently..
Maybe so, I just recall the DT990 being anything but bright, with exaggerated mid-bass. I will definitely have to give them another listen then, since the few people I know who tried the same set with me had similar impressions.
