Joined the drop early, but considering leaving for a secondhand HE-400S. Can anyone compare the two? Primarily for gaming (FPS), with music second (Drum and Bass, Pop, Hip hop, Jazz).
The K7XX would be an absolutely superb headphone for music and FPS gaming. Compared to the HiFiMan HE-400S, the K7XX has a wider sound-stage, bigger (and airier) sound, more-spacious earcups, and a single-sided cable.
The HE-400S are good, with superior center imaging - which might be welcome with some type of music (more intimate vocals). But unfortunately, their stock ear-cups are uncomfortable for long sessions (ear opening is too small). With some work, their pads can be replaced. (See 'Z Reviews' on YouTube.)
In their stock form, I'd say the K7XX's best the HE-400S in practically every way. You might want to also consider the Philips Fidelio X2 headphones, which have a bit more punch (than the K7XX) and world-beating build quality.
Thanks for the reply! What about non-stock? If I put those angled HM5 pads on the 400S, would your answer change?
Perhaps. I imagine that the 'pad mod' would tighten- and spice-up the 400S' somewhat boring sound (with their stock pads). I no longer own either headphone, but I'd bet that the K7XX would still be more spacious- and open-sounding. Plus, its single-sided cable would be easier to manage than the 400S' double cables.
