Are these an improvement on the ATH AD-900X that I'm using now? I'd want them more for gaming than for music (have the TH-X00's for tunes) so positioning / imaging are most important to me, followed by comfort.

I have these and the AD900X. The AKG is better in terms of comfort and is more suited for all types of genre. You also don't have to deal with the dreaded non-detachable springy cables as with the AD900X. The bass bump on the AKG really helps with music, although for games that might not be as important or even detrimental depending on what you are looking for. The AKG has a wider soundstage though not necessarily more than the AD900X. The AD900X really excels for classical music, especially orchestral pieces. It just reproduces string instruments more naturally vs the K7XX.

Thanks for that. Sounds like little if any gain over my current cans. Might have to spend a bit more on an open back upgrade.

honestly if all you care about is games, the ADX00X series is already an excellent pair. For a comfort upgrade, you can grab these velour pads: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251699464310?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&var=550609323239&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
It's thicker vs the stock without really compromising the sound.
