How do these compare to the m50x's and hd 598's?

TurqoiseTurtle598 are a completely different animal. I had them until recently, when I decided to sell them after a short period of comparing them to these. They are less impressive IMO, but many claim they have a special sound stage. I think they are more fit for classical music, there's nearly no bass in them. Other thing I didn't like is the no-auto-adjust headband AKG has. It makes it feel cheaper and of course slightly annoying to deal with every now and then. The K7XX are very good all-around cans. As for the M50x, they are closed-back, whereas K7XX are open so it's an indirect comparison. Personally, I'm yet to find a closed-back that's not hurting after a while, which is why my preference is open-back.

TurqoiseTurtleI have both a pair of akg k series headphones and a pair of 598s. To compare I would say that the 598s are much better in terms of quality of materials and construction. I have had to take my AKGs apart on 3 separate occasions to solder wires back in place and have had to replace the cord once. The head band has plastic on the underside that broke on both sides the week I got them, I never even bothered to replace it. The upside is that I keep doing this because I simply find the akgs to sound good enough to make the extra work worth it. They are definitely much more power hungry, sound like trash without a well paired amp but once you get it right and pair it with an amp it likes they sound amazing. They also are much cooler than the 598s.
To sum it up, if you are going to do anything at all that will break them (like move from 1 spot), or not using an amp or willing to find an amp that they pair well with go with 598s (also keep in mind these match up to 600s in price). If you are willing to work around the cheap build quality and how power hungry they are you will be happy with the sound on them. As for the the 50x it is really not a fair comparison, very different things.
