How do these compare with the Sennheiser HD 6xx?

JCrukThe measurements are available for both at innerfidelity's measurement database, and from my casual observations The AKG should have less of mid centric profile and more of a v-shaped one. The bass frequency extension seems to reach much lower on the AKG, and the corresponding 30Hz square-wave test shows slightly less deformation as expected. On the other side of the spectrum, the HD6xx has reduced upper-mid/high frequency energy as compared to the AKG. However, the distortion measurements directly below indicate largely clean power handling at the extreme of 100dB. This should lead to a more reserved but detailed treble output from the Sennheiser. Overall, the Sennheiser is likely a better buy if you are planning on pairing it with powerful up-stream gear (dedicated amplifier/DAC systems, etc.), so long as you don't mind the truncated bass. Another thing to consider is that the AKG requires much more power to drive, despite its low impedance, so it is going to be restricted as to what gear will let it perform at its best. (i.e. very low output impedance but with high output swing and peak power) This is another advantage to the HD6xx, as it has the efficiency to play well on less powerful systems whilst scaling in quality with increased power. The AKG is more of a complete sound, but with the aforementioned caveats.
