There's a lot of questions about what DAC would be good match for this AMP but how's the sound quality with iMac's internal DAC? Is it good (enough) as I have read elsewhere? Or would I need an external DAC?
I'm waiting for my 6XX to arrive and that's my first step towards better audio.
Anyone? Is it simply a stupid idea to get this without a DAC? Source will be an iMac from 2016?
I can probably invest on a DAC some day later but I'm not willing to spend that much money right now (6XX, this and DAC).
I have used a Macbook with an O2 and I also place a Chord Mojo in between the two as a DAC source using HD600 headphones (I also have the HD6xx headphones just that I built a bottlehead crack to drive them). It largely depends on the music you are playing back through your setup as well.
TLDR, you'll be perfectly fine to try this amp with no DAC required, your iMAC should be perfectly fine to play your music. When you have money set aside for a DAC purchase, look at the offerings and the reviews available at the time and choose one in your budget range. Then sit back or do whatever you enjoy best when listening to your music and play back the tracks you love and listen to your music. A DAC will help, no question, but it will not be the end all, my music is terrible, I can't believe I didn't just buy a DAC to begin with, type of scenario. And who knows, you may just enjoy the music straight from your iMAC amplified with your new amp.
Thanks! That's what I thought myself (or was at least hoping for).
Good to have someone confirming that.
