Just had my first listen since setting this up. Some first observations. Fantastic service from Massdrop. One week from placing order to delivery in the U.K. including going through customs impressive packaging. On first sight a bit smaller than I was expecting but nicer than the pictures show. A handsome little beast! No problems setting up ( Yamaha CD player vi Nordost blue heaven interconnects). Stick some Zappa in with the intention of letting the burn in begin. Had to have a listen though! Big disappointment... bloomy bass through 6xx which are definitely no noted for. Vocals sound promising but I hope the burn in really does work cos things ain’t looking great.
Dreamer23Did you mean a different word by chance? Typically, describing something as 'bloomy' is a positive: bloom - A quality of expansive richness and warmth, like the live body sound of a cello.
I can say that for me with my 6XX, the low and high end definitely sound more defined when I was listening to The Planets by Holst. Mine is still burning in as well so I only expect things to get better.

jaydunndidditMaybe the wrong word. A bit muffled and smeared. Certainly not tight. What I like about the 6xx is the taut bottom end. Don’t wanna go back to my not-missed X2’s!
Dreamer23Hmm, are you using a DAC by chance? I'm using an iFi idsd BL and haven't ran the CTH without it yet. It sounds very natural/neutral with a bit of warmth to my ears. Bass is pretty controlled and polite even when I was listening to some pop music. I also have dekoni pads on mine so maybe you're getting a bad seal on your head? I wear glasses and have long hair and it was a pain to get a consistent seal with the stock pads for me.

jaydunndidditNo dac. Straight from cd to amp. I’ve had the phones for over a year so I’m aware of their sound. Curr burning in so might give it a try later
Dreamer23Yeah, that may be your best bet then. I believe they said it can take up to 50hrs of playback just to burn off impuritites of the tube and another 50 or so to let things settle. Either way, hope it works out for you in the end.

jaydunndidditthanks. I hope so. I kinda got sucked into buying this rather than a solid state amp by various reviews of the 6xx although I had my doubts. Love the sound tubes give to the output stage of my amp and CD player so thought I’d give it a try. If not I’ll sell and buy my original choice

Dreamer23CD has to have some sort of dac between CD and amp (digital. Your using your CD players DAC. This could be good or bad depending on the CD transport your using. Even your monitor has a dac in it if there HDMI to headphone out.
