Heads up.... I just bought on ebay the NEW version of the Genalex 6922 Gold Lion. Wow! This is superior to my old version that died on me. The new version ( out of the box)
search
is more laid back and smoother with better bass and a bit less forward. Very clean sounding. Hence a great match for the elex since it tames it down a bit. The seller on ebay is wpc1896. The new versions have plates that are spoked ( see pic) as opposed to being square in shape. Also the box on the new version has a bar code. It is my understanding that he only has the latest version and hence you won't be stuck with old leftovers. Great price at 36.95 free shipping. Update ... This tube is especially well suited with the 6xx. Im now not loving it as much with the elex. Greater transparency , smoothness ,detail and tighter bass with the 6xx. Im now finding it a bit too bright in the highs with the elex. The Gold Pin EH seems a bit more balanced. Hopefully my tube is representative of the new units now being sold. Update oct 30... Have now lived with this new version of the gold lion for 2 months. For comparative purposes i reinstalled my Electro Harmonix gold pin (which i did love) to get a better feel for the differences between them. Let me say this..... I cannot stomach the sound of the Electro Harmonix anymore. Period! There is a big difference in clarity smoothness sparkle etc. Absolutely no contest. Again im talking about the latest "spoked plate" version of the Gold Lion in conjunction with the Sennheiser 6XX.

Paullieb213How is this new Gold Lion compared to the stock Electro-Harmonix?

ls13cocoI have had the stock EH and the EH gold pin version. I would say that the Gold Lion is smoother at the top end with deeper bass. Better transparency also. After living with this for over a week i would say that this tube in my opinion is especially great with the sennheiser 6xx.

Paullieb213Try the jj tesla for your elex. It rolls off the upper mid and treble really well

Paullieb213Genalex 6922 is not bad tube, but I have found 6N23P Reflector from 1965 is more enjoyable. 6N23P Voshod is not bad too. Going up from cheap to more pricy: Amperex, Philips 6922; Siemens E88CC, Sylvania and RCA 7308 or E188CC tubes. And the king of the all 6922 tubes are CCa from Telefunken and Siemens. Some Mullard CV2492 or CV2493 are very sweet sounding too. Also, recently have bought on ebay Zaerix E188CC, Tungsram E88CC and my favorite Tesla E88CC 26$ a pair (like them so much, so have bought 20 of them). Also have bought 100 Russians 6N23P Reflector 1965-1973 from Ukraine, as they sound so close to my bloody expensive Telefunken and Siemens CCa, but Russian tubes are 100 times cheaper. I have tried almost all tubes, except RTF brand, as I have also Phatos Aurium headphone amp utilizing the same tubes. looking on Electro-Harmonix and Gold Lion 6922 tubes. Looks like they have been made on the same factory in Russia. Lets roll the tubes! Cheers. Kim

kimdeug6n23p reflector with this amp is just amazing. Match made in heaven
kimdeugWould you say mullar is warmer than amperex? I have the goldd lion that I like a lot better than the stock tube and makes bass a little warmer. But I'm looking for something that makes everything sound warm.

HohenheimsenbergGold lion 6922 is more softer than EH 6922. The NOS Mullard CV2492/2493 is higher grade tube and even more lash. I think you will be very happy with Sylvania 7308 tube, as they produces very bassy and detailed sound. But again, remember : it ia a hybrid amplifier and for bass is mostly responsible the amplification part (not the driver tube). From my experience, the driver tube is more affecting the clarity and details rather than bass. I am using Siemens CCa now, but from price to quality I am a big fan of Russian 6N23P Reflector 1965-1973. Have around 200 tubes from 6922 family, so have a big experience to compare them on my Cavaly hybrid and on Phatos Aurium. My gears: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/cayin-ha-6a-tube-headphone-amplifier-kt88-and-el34-with-xlr4-and-4-4mm-impedance-matched-output.918779/page-15 Regards, Kim

kimdeugActually my CTH fell apart almost 2 years ago. Tons of problems with noisy volume switch. Basically not usable anymore having inferior sound. The thx 789 is superior when using dark headphones like the 6xx. The thx amps are inferior when using focal headphones as they sound dry and course on them. The monoprice 887 is superior in that respect having much greater weight than the 789 but still a bit lean sounding on the elex. Saving my money for the very highly rated class A Rebel amp which has a very rich and detailed sound.
