Don't get me wrong, THIS IS A VERY GOOD AMP but its too solid state sounding for my taste. Tube rolling doesn't really do anything for this AMP. i have the full stack with this, Airist R2R DAC and THX AAA 789

but i am thinking about replacing this with the Staving Student 2 that i just put together from the Kit.

i feel like SS2 is more fun and dynamic

GurbakhshishYou could try getting an LPS for under 100 dollars and then roll and jj tesla or cheap used tube. Tube rolling has a big effect when you change the power supply of the CTH. It's still a hybrid, but the frequency response, attack and slam will change dramatically

GurbakhshishI understand this is a late reply but my experience is VERY different to yours. Do yourself a favour and roll either the 6N6P and/or the 6N1P-EB. You will be amazed. The 6N6P is a low gain tube so you have to crank it up a bit but both these tubes are significant upgrades in detail, separation and bottom end texture. Edit: I'll add that you can pretty much box up the 6922 or throw it away after changing to one of the above tubes.. the 6922 is useless in relation to these tubes. You will never use it again.

Ninja_TheoryWe're you in the Head-fi thread? Feel like I just saw your name, but yea roll a nice Russian tube. I got the 6H23-EB and it doesn't sound like a solid state amp at all. I was thinking about upgrading to a Liquid platinum but this tube convinced me to keep the CTH

HelpbotYeah I did pop in there - and yep I am sure the 6H23-EB sounds beautiful. Similar detail and bottom end weight/texture to the tubes I mentioned. I'm still burning in the 6N1P-EB so I haven't given it a listen on the CTH yet.. but I know it will be superb. Contrary to OP's initial impressions, my experience is that the CTH is totally transformed with the right tube (and there are a few good ones to roll or settle on). You may as well box up the 6922 and say your goodbyes.. it won't be used again.

Ninja_Theoryi actually had 6n6p handy for my garage1217 project starlight and i popped it in this one, it definitely is a better option, i still think Starving Student 2 is more dynamic than this one. i also swapped out the power input for this one from 35W to 48W.

GurbakhshishI appreciate your response. The sentiment online is that this amp is laid back in it's approach compared to some. I'm not sure what you mean when you say you switched to 48W, just hope you aren't running more than 28 volts into it for safety's sake!

Helpbotthis amp comes with a (28v x 1.25amp) 35W. Community has tried higher powered power input with this because it seems like that this is under powered. i swapped out the power supply with a (24v x 2amp) 48W unit which actually improves the dynamics and lower end a lot.

GurbakhshishOhh I see, my LPS shows me the amps the tube draws so the number 0.40 was stuck in my head. Glad you're getting results with yours

Ninja_TheoryDid you decide which of the two tubes you liked best? Very interested.

variant-116N1P-EB. Marginally.. they are both great. I switch between them every now and then. I might also try the Starving Student 2 on @Gurbakhshish recommendation. The challenge I'm facing now, is that I've been spending a lot of time with my 789, then when I go back to the CTH, I miss the detail.
