I would have thought the first 500 would have been snapped up by now...
The February ship date is insane. Given MD track record and terrible shipping, most people won’t get it till March.
That's one reason but I didn't jump on-board because I don't have a balanced DAC to maximise this LCX.
Also, I just bought the iFi Micro iDSD BL.
Supposedly, the LC acts as a balanced amp whether or not you are using a balanced DAC. In it's description of the LC 2.0, the Cavalli Audio website states: " It’s fully-balanced as well, on both its inputs and outputs. In fact, whether your DAC has balanced output or not - and chances are that it doesn’t - the Liquid Carbon accounts for that with phase splitters on its single-ended inputs, so that it can “generate” balanced input signals. ." Cee_Tee has confirmed that this feature is carried over in the LCX.
Now, whether or not this works exactly as well as using an actual balanced DAC, I can't say. But at minimum, it allows you to connect a DAC to the RCA inputs and get the benefit of the much greater power of the XLR output if you use balanced headphone cables. But yeah, the March delivery date is a real negative. I'd like to upgrade from my Little Dot MKIII and am debating whether I want a LCX in March or a Schiit Vahalla 2 in a week.
I got mine after the first 100 or so nice..can't wait to hear this amp
I'm sure it will be great!
Don't know what cans you're using with that little dot (assuming they are high impedance ). I'm using a Valhalla 2 right now with a pair of HD 650's and it sounds awesome, so you can't go wrong there. I' looking for a ballanced solid state for something a bit different and this one looks damn good for the price. Plus it will work better with a future set of 32 ohm cans. The wait is gonna be a bitch though.
I'm primarily using a Sennheiser HD 700 and have a 6XX coming from Massdrop (down to about three months now). Both the Senns play well with tubes; I ordered the Valhalla 2 yesterday morning and it shipped only a few hours later. With these headphones, I was somewhat torn between the two amps, but the six month wait for the LCX was a major factor. (I also have a Hifiman 400i which almost certainly would do better with LCX, but I don't listen to it that much--mostly for games to save tube life since I use a SS Magni 2U with it.) It would be an understatement to say that I know much about Massdrop's business model, but I have to think they would have sold a lot more of these (and the CTH, which didn't sell out either) with a shorter wait time. I've been monitoring this drop and, outside of a big rush when it went live, it's been selling slowly with a fair number of cancellations. There may be nothing that can be done about the manufacturing lead time, but perhaps they should bite the bullet and start production on some estimated number and not announce the drop until the shipping date is 2-3 months away. I bet that this drop would have sold out if the delivery date was before the end of the year.
