Hi all, hoping someone can help me out with a sizing question. I wear an 11.5E in the McCallister wingtips, but the lack of an E option is making me question what I should go for here. With it being unlined and suede should I try the 11.5D, or go up a half size to the 12D? I'd hate to spend the money now and find out in four months that they aren't comfortable. Thanks guys!
TooberI hate to answer a question with a question, but do you know your Brannock size? It seems like the general guidance is to go with that. The reason I ask is the 5-last is a little weird - it is true-to-size for some, and a half-size down for others.
FWIW, my Brannock is a 12 D, but I wear an 11.5 E in AE 65-last shoes like the McAllister (so I'm in the second sizing camp - I have 11.5 E Strands on order now, and several other 5-last shoes in that size). Having the same dilemma as you, I ordered a 12 D. I tried on some Dundees a while back in that size and they felt good. I'm hopeful.
Hope that helps!
M635_GuyI should've included that in my post, but I'm an 11.5E on the Brannock. So by the sounds of it 12D will likely be my best bet. I guess my biggest trepidation with going for the 12D is that people seem to say that with the suede you have a bit more wiggle room, so I'd be worried about exacerbating that factor by going a half-size up. Thank you for the info!
Hmm decisions decisions.
M635_GuyBut this isn't on the 5 last aka the 65 last it is the 511 last. Totally different thing but the statement that it is a little weird is absolutely true.
MikeNolaI get it - my point was that he commented he was a 11.5 E in the AE McAllister (as am I), but my Brannock is 12D. The general statement/recommendation is that the 511-last is true-to-size, so I went with a 12D.
It isn't a 100% guarantee that because we wear the same size in the 5-last that we wear the same size in the 511-last, but it gives him a data point. A Brannock measurement would be better.
M635_GuyYeah I just didn't want anyone getting confused and think this was the 65/5 last. I don't wear the same size in the 65 last which is a very long last. The 511 last is shorter with a fuller toe. I am between a 11 and 11.5 D on a Brannock (really an 11.25). Depending on the model 65 last shoe I wear an 10.5D (oxfords) or an 11D but in the 511 Last I am an 11.5D. I tried an 11 D in Dundees but they were too short and jammed my toes) so I went as close to TTS as possible on the higher end.
You should be good with the 12D.
MikeNolaThe Daltons are also built around the 511 last so you could go try them on at your local store. I would be all over these if E width was offered.
TooberI wear a 10E on the 65 last, which others have said is a bit longer and narrower than other lasts, and a 10.5D on the 511 last. It's worth going to an AE store and getting Brannock'd to be sure though, as things like instep height and length from heel to ball vary and can make a difference.
uansari1Thank you for the info. I got my Brannock measurement at an AE store this past fall when I bought the McCallisters, that's when I first found out I was an 11.5E.
TooberHere's the thing - I don't think the 5-last is generally considered to run true to size and width for most people. Worth checking with AE, but a 12D and an 11.5E are going to have very similar fit. As I commented above, I wear and 11.5E in most 5-last shoes, and am a Brannock 12D. If you can get back to an AE store again, I'd try on some 12D in the 511 last and get re-measured just to see.
M635_GuyBefore actually getting into GYW shoes and high end men's footwear in general I actually pretty much always defaulted to 12 (at that point I hadn't even considered width, so pretty much I was going with 12D across the board). With that being said, I definitely should get back into the AE store just to give the 511 last a shot and see how it feels. I imagine that a 12D is going to work just fine, but this is certainly worth investigating and knowing for sure.
Thank you again for the info!
