I've tried cutting several slices of fairly dense bread by now, and the knife is very difficult to steer. It tends to slide out toward the thin side of the slice, away from the body of the loaf. I assume this is both because the blade is fairly thick, and because the scalloped edge is only beveled on one side. Has anyone else experienced this, and does it get better with practice? For comparison, I am used to a cheap, but surprisingly decent, thinner bread knife from PureKomachi2, which is easy to steer. I wonder if the steering issue is related to the side on which the knife is ground. Yaxell makes a very similar 9" knife, also of BD1N steel, 2.9mm thick at the base, but the grind is on the other side of the blade. Both of my two other single bevel knives are ground on the same, right side of the blade, like the Yaxell --with the knife held vertically, handles down and the spines to the left, the bevels are visible. The massdrop slicer is ground on the opposite side. I wonder if I got a knife designed to be used by a left-hander? With the Massdrop Vital super slicer, one needs to hold the spine to the right, handle down, to see the bevel grind. Put another way, my knife is ground on the side which has "massdrop x apogee" screened on it. Yes, that must be it!! The photo shown on the drop overview has the bevel ground on the opposite side from the knife I received. (I suppose it's possible the photo was mirror-image reversed in posting). But, also, In the photo under Overview, there is no text on the side which has the bevel. With my knife, the text is screened on the side with the bevel. Could I get a reply here, from the maker or from Massdrop? Thank you.

swimjayWow...came back to read some discussions out of curiosity, now that the knife is out. Can't believe this has been mentioned multiple times and no one from Drop has responded. Yes, what your describing sounds like a single bevel knife that's intended for a left handed user. @JaleesaG @JonasHeineman Was there supposed to be an option to choose left/right handed? Or are these all lefty? And if so, why do the pictures show differently? Edit : except for pic 7, which shows what would be a left handed grind. You guys have GOT to stop letting your image editing team use the mirror function. It you need a pic pointing the other way on the site, take another photo. We've seen it enough times causing issues with folding knives, but clearly it's an issue for single bevel knives as well. Really, anything...no product pictures should be mirrored if care about your products being as advertised when they get to your customers. Unless you're selling, like, a Rubick's cube or something

KavikHi Kavik, I emailed Massdrop about this issue, and, after an exchange of emails and photos with Brett R. in Customer Support, was sent a replacement knife. I asked that Brett please have this knife checked before it was shipped, to make sure it was ground on the correct side. He replied that he was sure it was, as he hadn't heard of anyone else having this issue. I pointed out that at least one other poster in the discussion had mentioned the same problem. The replacement knife came, and was identical with the knife I initially received -- ground on the side appropriate for a left-handed user (I'm right-handed). I suspect all the knives have the same grind. I contacted Customer Support again, and Judi H. asked me to return both knives for a refund, using their UPS label and enclosing their supplied RMA. I did this, and the knives reached their warehouse Monday, June 10th, but I've not yet received a refund, and Judi H. hasn't responded to several emails. Needless to say, all a bit distressing.

Kavik@ Kavik, I don't think that it's just a mirror-image photo issue. Notice that in the photo of the knife slicing meat, though the knife is being held in the left hand, the bevel is appropriate for a right-hander (for slicing bread, or anything where the body of what is being cut is to the left, (and held by the left hand, as with a loaf of bread), and the sliced piece is to the right). The Massdrop text is not visible -- i.e., in the knife shown, the printing on the blade is on the side opposite the bevel. In the knife I received, the printed text "Massdrop x Apogee" is on the same side as the ground bevel. I'm pretty sure several of these photos were added after the initial drop and my purchase. As I recall, the single initial, color photo was very similar to the photo with the sliced meat, though I'm not sure whether it included the meat (I don't remember that it did).

swimjayThat's disturbing....I haven't had to return much here, but when I did I had no issue getting the refund. I'd try opening a new support ticket, if your current emails are going direct to an individual. Get someone else involved with it. Good catch on the meat pic, but I can't imagine they did the photoshoot with multiple knives and didn't notice they had opposite bevels? I'm so confused now lol I mean, you should be right, they should all have the bevel on the same side, from one knife to the next.....unless they're grinding the bevel on a blank, then welding that into the tang, and some are getting swapped? I have no idea at this point...unless everyone got a left and only a couple people noticed? @Deaomega1214 Can you shed any light on this?

swimjayHey @swimjay and @Kavik we're looking into this and will get a response to folks soon. We have only gotten one support ticket about it so far. The direction of a bevel matters a lot on a straight edge but shouldn't cause any major steering issues on a serrated/scalloped blade. I carved up a few loaves with these using my right hand and didn't have the issues you described. Sorry for the slow reply, I'm still catching up from Blade Show.

KavikThis afternoon I got word that Massdrop issued a credit, so, all's well that ends well.
