At $450, skip these. Spend a wee bit more for the fostex x00 ebony. They sound better in all aspects and the build is better. Kinda regret buying the Beyer. They're not bad headphones bit they sound wooly and not crystal clear. Plus you don't get great sub bass even with a good seal. I will be keeping them as a $380 beater, ha.

Johnny.DramaThis seems to be getting compared to the Fostex quite a bit, which makes sense. The Ebony was a headphone I was considering as my next step for closed backs but the one thing that continued to turn me away was their apparent lack of isolation, as mentioned in various reviews and posts I’ve seen, so I went with the Beyers, which I’m digging. For someone looking to use those in an office, is the isolation really not that great?

bcaulfI did a comparison of them in my review and the 177X isolate substantially better, especially with the leather pads. Also, as pretty as the Fostex are, they have really weak hinges and are prone to breaking. The Beyers are built much better and would survive an accidental drop on the floor but I wouldn't feel as confident of that from the Fostex.

Johnny.DramaBuild quality is actually what drove me to buy these instead of TRX00. Way too many confirmed reports of broken hinges. I might consider getting a pair used, but I won't pay $500 for headphones that will eventually break.

Johnny.DramaLet me rephrase. The Fostex subjectively feel more premium. Can't say if the hinges will break on mine. They seem fine. I'm not rough on my gear nor would I take them on the go. The Beyers are better suited for that as the name suggests. Yes, the Beyers isolate more but they're ported so there is a tiny bit of leak. Wouldn't take them to a library but an office might be okay.

Johnny.DramaThe Beyers aren't ported, but the Fostex are. They leak just a tiny bit with the velour pads due to how they seal. The Fostex are ported at the cup as they are technically semi open. The Beyer's, just like the 1770, are truly a closed headphone. This is even more evident with any other pad installed. I take both models to work on a daily basis and the Fistex assuredly let in and out a lot more noise by comparison, especially with their stock pads.

jaydunndidditThey are ported. I see a freaking hole in the earcup right by the hinge. If you cover it up it reduces the bass. It's ported.

Johnny.DramaHaving a bass port is not the same as the Fostex are semi-closed. That's my only point. The Fostex have a pretty good gap around the ENTIRE cup. That's a significant difference. I mean seriously, the 1770, which the 177X are based off of, have been around for ages and they are not considered ported or semi-closed.

jaydunndidditJay you’re my dude. I asked the question above pondering if I should go with the pros or the go. If you got a minute I’d love your outlook as your advice in the past has aided me greatly.

WILLxLOVEHey, sorry for the late reply. Personally, I say go with the 177X. Sonically, they have more in common with the 1770 but are a bit smoother and less edgy overall. They are also internally balanced already so you can get a balanced cable (I went with Periapt) later down the road if you so choose. The added sheepskin pads are also super swank and much preferred over the typical Beyer velours and leatherette IMO and help smooth things out even more so while giving your ears more room to breath. You lose the case and coiled cable but I don't find that to be a big deal. I picked up a Slappa case and it holds my cables and extra pads just fine and is small enough to fit in my work bag. Also, with these they have a lower impedance, so they actually are good on the go and don't need a lot of juice to get close to their max potential. I use mine in the office and travel with them frequently and they do a damn fine job of not letting noise in or out with the sheepskin pads. The Beyer velours have always been leaky for me no matter what and even with my T1p's, I have flat sheepskin pads with them as well. While many love to nitpick, these serve their purpose of being a good isolating, great sounding, portable closed back headphone as advertised. They're also built quite well so I don't know where the build quality complaints are coming from. They're literally built just like every other higher end Beyer and have less plastic pieces than even my more expensive T1p. Personally, once you get a case for them and swap to the sheepskin pads, they've become my fave office pair next to my Elegia and Cascade's and sonically slot themselves somewhere between those two. Really just depends on the day and music choices of which I prefer. But, the fact they stay in constant rotation instead of sitting in a box in my closet says it all to me, really. Even more so, they sound good powered from just my Pixel in a pinch, or via BT from my ES100 or xDSD, my O2+SDAC at work, and sound great balanced out of the THX789 and even more wonderful with tubes from the CTH or ZDT Jr. They're not amp picky at all and just sound good hooked into anything. Which, for a set of 32 ohm cans geared towards mobile use, says a lot considering Beyer snobs only think they NEED to utilize their high impedance driver versions is just nonsense. But knowing they can reach a bit further out of desktop units is just a cherry on top in the grand scheme of things. Lotsa words, but hope that helps ya some.

jaydunndidditseconded on the fostex hinges and the lack of sense that the DT177x are going to suddenly break themselves
