Shame it's not going to ship until mid May. I would love to buy one for the 2019 TGO Challenge - 200+ mile coast to coast crossing of Scotland. Unfortunately it takes place in mid May 2019 so it will be just too late.

DannyRPThe TGO Challenge seems like a great event. I've read some of Chris Townsend's writing about it.
There is actually a good chance that the tent will arrive by then, but I can't promise that. The first X-Mid drop back in July had a estimated ship date of April 19 and we are currently on track to meet that. This second drop for the X-Mid is part of that same production run, so the tents will all arrive at Massdrop at the same time. The difference is that the tents for the first drop participants will be processed first (QA checks, handling, shipping) but it will likely only take a few days or a week longer to process them for the second batch. The one month delay (May 20) is very conservative. So these tents are likely to ship out in mid-late April as well, but I can't promise that and obviously you don't want to rely on that.

dandurstonThanks for the reply. I'm going to place an order and take a chance. Even if it doesn't arrive in time it's a shelter that I really want to own.

DannyRPThanks Danny. You'll love it. It's awesome. It's a dream to use in wet conditions with dry entry, good space, no sag fabric, ample vestibules, large proper vents that can close easily etc.

dandurstonSounds perfect for Northern England and Scotland where wet weather is usually guaranteed. I've joined the drop.
How does the fabric strength compare to a similar sil and pu nylon? Polyester has so much going for it compared to nylon in wet conditions.

DannyRPFor the same weight and coating, nylon has higher tear strength but poly is more abrasion resistant and UV resistant. So nylon starts off stronger, but it also UV degrades much faster so after a year or two polyester can wind up stronger. So I think poly is a no brainer for a floor material (due to higher abrasion resistance) and also a better choice for the fly because while it is a bit less strong initially, it's still plenty strong and it doesn't degrade over time like nylon, so you can have that excellent no sag in the rain while still having a sufficiently strong fabric.
The only exception to that is if someone wants to push the limits and use extremely light fabrics. If you want to use 7D fabrics for a tent/tarp then you want to use nylon because it's barely strong enough, whereas poly is not. The lightest you'd want to go with polyester is 15D....maybe 10D if you're pushing it. Below is a link to about the lightest polyester that isn't crazy. The poly used for the X-Mid is one step up in durability over this (20D vs 15D) and 1.2oz per yd (vs. 1.0oz/yd) https://ripstopbytheroll.com/collections/waterproof-polyester-fabric/products/membrane-silpoly
The other factor is sil versus PU. Sil tends to add tear strength, while PU weakens tear strength but helps with abrasion. So you don't want to add too much PU to polyester. You want some because you get a much higher HH for the weight and you can seam tape it, but not too much or it weakens the material. So that's why the X-Mid is 2000mm and not 4000mm PU, which drops the tear strength by perhaps 30%.

dandurstonMy X-Mid is in the UK so will hopefully get it early next week. Looks like I'll definitely be taking it on the TGO. A couple of other people in an Ultralight Facebook group are also doing the TGO and have X-Mids on order. They might be a common sight across the Scottish Highlands in mid May. Big thumbs up to Massdrop for smashing their expected ship dates. Can't wait to try the tent, hopefully get a few nights camp in over Easter to try it.

DannyRPIs the TGO Challenge as crazy as everyone says? I read talk of 120km/hr winds and people getting lifted off the ground. But I know the crazy stories get the most attention plus folks might be embellishing a bit, so hopefully that's not typical.

dandurstonThe weather in the Scottish Highlands can be amazing one minute and then become totally wild the next. You really can get every season in one day. Winds like that do happen on the mountain tops especially in the Cairngorms but I'll be sticking to sheltered glens if the weather is extreme. There are plenty of potentially dangerous river crossings, many of the rivers are spate rivers that go from benign to dangerous torrents quickly after heavy rain which Scotland gets aplenty. Should be an awesome adventure.
