Hi Dan, Just an idea. Would it be possible to see if a drop could be organised for the Luta Locura carbon tent poles, that would fit this one person tent. I don't know how Massdrop works, but is there a way to gauge how many people might be interested in them, to see if it is viable. I certainly would, and it would be handy to be able to ship the poles with the tent to save costs.
BlackTea55Hi BlackTea, We had a discussion about possible doing this a few weeks ago here: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2293116 I agree it would be nice to save on shipping costs and maybe get a deal on the poles. I think Massdrop is looking into it, but they are also very busy right now so I'm not sure how high of a priority it is for them. If they do have the resources to follow up on it, and if Ruta Locura is interested in participating, then perhaps it will happen. I think they realize there is a fair bit of interest here, so it really comes down to resources on Massdrop's part and willingness on Ruta Locura's part. Perhaps the best approach is just to wait to order poles from Ruta Locura until closer to the time when tents are delivered so that if this does happen then you can take advantage.

dandurstonThanks Dan, I hadn't seen that discussion.
BlackTea55It's also worth noting that you can buy aluminum poles (rather than carbon) from TarpTent for a much lower price. They have these for $16 ea in various lengths including a 48" option that would work nicely. https://www.tarptent.com/product/vertical-support-pole/

dandurstonHmmm 240g for $32 or 170g for $90... =D
JoomyYou can build your own poles using Easton parts from Quest Outfitters that are lighter still and probably cheaper: https://www.questoutfitters.com/Tent_Poles_CF.htm But the nice thing with the Ruta Locura ones is the adjustable height, which is handy to ensuring a perfect pitch even if the ground is uneven.

dandurstonHmm interesting. Only .346" ~ 8.8 cm. Think they'd be robust enough? Also I don't think they are rigid, which may or may not matter.

JoomyThe diameter looked a bit questionable to me too, but there is a fellow on Reddit that has been experimenting with them for his X-Mid and he says they are stiff: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/ap8ai5/question_regarding_carbon_fiber_abrasion_when/

dandurstonInteresting. Given the price it's almost certainly worth a shot. Thanks Dan, you are a font of information. Edit: Another thing that comes to mind is using the Zpacks 122cm poles and fashioning some sort of grommet holder for the end. They are 11mm thick, 75g and $29, a nice middle ground.

BlackTea55Hi Dan, I ended up getting some Tarptent Alum Poles. Now the tips on these are 17mm long and have the knob on the end for a secure fit. Have you actually tested tent poles on any of your outing's with the X-Mid, and to prevent any damage to the fly, do you think that the 17mm long tips would be to long.
BlackTea55No I haven't tried out the TarpTent poles with the X-Mid. Their grommet/peak design is similar to expect they would work but 17mm does sound pretty long. If they look like they're pushing on the fly rather than the grommet, presumably you could cut or file the nubs down a bit?
