For any other Canadians ordering this tent, I got hit with $109CAD duties etc when I picked it up at the post office. Taxes in my province are 15% which would have been $40. I'm not sure what portion of that is duties and what portion is fees from DHL but I would assume the DHL fees are a hefty portion of it. Pretty ridiculous IMO. I probably will not be ordering from Drop again if they continue to use DHL.

camjamSorry to hear about this expensive charge. The same thing happened a month ago when the first batch shipped out, so we looked into into it then to figure out what the costs were: https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2404631 Basically, there's actually not a lot of DHL fees. Rather it's almost entirely taxes/tariffs by the Canadian government. These packages are shipped via DHL but they're handed over to Canada Post so the customs stuff and delivery is handled by Canada Post. The only fee is a $10 handling fee which still sucks but it's the lowest fee possible. The rest of the amount is sales tax and a tariff. Canada has an 18% tariff on imported tents (see link) so with your 15% sales tax + 18% tent tariff you get a 33% tax/duty owed to the Canadian government. The 18% tariff on tents is a rare one and often the border people don't know about it so many packages don't get charged, but apparently whoever is processing these is on the ball with it unfortunately. So sorry again about the unfortunate bill. There's not too much Drop can do in this case because it's not mostly fees, like some other shipping methods. The same taxes/duty/tariff are supposed to be apply to any imported tent - whether that's from Drop, MSR or Gossamer Gear. I think the difference here is that these tents seem to get imported as a large batch (e.g. a pallet full of boxes) rather than individually, so the border people are more on top of charging the taxes then they are for individual packages. Drop could try a different method and hope they slip though, but it would just be luck as it would come down to whoever is processing these knowing about the tariff or not.

esmeadowsSo probably 18% tariff + 5% GST = 23% tax = ~$50 CAD + $10 handling fee.
