Product Description
Following the success of the Massdrop x Fostex TH-X00, we teamed up with another brand that Foster manufactures headphones for, E-MU Systems, to bring you a new pair of purpleheart headphones—this time smaller, lighter, and perfectly suited for on-the-go use. The Massdrop x E-MU Purpleheart features handcrafted solid wood enclosures and biocellulose drivers, like its full-size relative, with a more understated aesthetic and a warm, appealing, non-fatiguing sound Read More

Creative Aurvana Live! copy? I have those and lasted 10+ years. Still sounds awsome. Plastic was okay quality, leater-like material start to crack after 10 years of casual listening. Aurvana LIVE! on sale now for $49 at us.creative.com

Hmmm - If 'Fosters' brewed in purple heart, I'd drink more of it... Apparently, without the 'Mass' your copy editors are now at the tender mercies of their compu- spellers, which have a somewhat chequered past... {Blurb fixed now from Foster's to Fostex - amazing how a little sarcasm lubes the Wheels of Progress...}

I'm going to assume you're Australian if you think they're referring to beer by mentioning "Fosters." Fostex = Foster, from their profile blurb: Fostex. June 1, 1948 (as Foster Electric Company, Ltd.) Foster Denki KK (フォスター電機株式会社, Fosutā Denki kabushiki kaisha) is an electronics company that manufactures loudspeakers and audio equipment for other companies or sells them under the trade name Fostex. It is traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

After 2.5 years of daily wear at a desk job one of the ear pieces snapped off. Very sad day.

Just got mine today, one thing that I noticed is that the wood cups rattle a bit. They are not firmly in place, they instead rattle in and out just a tiny amount. Is that normal, or do I have to tighten some screws internally (I'd rather not have to)? Doesn't seem to cause and sound changes, just a little annoying when I move my head and the rattle is amplified internally.

Cool, didn't know about the oxidation. Like you, I think they look very good anyway. Regarding the loose cups, you would think that they would be 100% secure and tight when they leave the factory. Hmmm.

Yeah I would've hoped so, but apparently not and I'm not the only one in this discussion thread even. The guy at Drop who designed this pair said in an earlier post about the same issue to just take the pads off, undo the 2 screws holding the driver cover, and behind there tighten the 2 screws holding the cups in place. Its at least an easy fix, but I dont feel like taking eveeything apart, esp since it doesnt change the sound at all if they rattle a bit.

Just received mine, sound great so far. Should be called "Walnutheart" or "Brownheart" or "Non-Purpleheart" because there is zero, absolutely zero, purple-ish color, tint, or suggestion here. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter to me (they still look great), but it would have been nice to have the color look somewhat close to that shown in the pictures. If shown to 100 random people, I doubt anyone would identify "purple" as a colorway.

A REMOVABLE-CABLE version of this headphone in a future drop would be nice.

Selling basically CAL!s for 75 $ on Massdrop is far from bergain. Also as a long time user of at least 2 pairs of Aurvena Lives, please believe me when I tell you that these will fell apart after few months if you use them as portables. These are not portable headphones.

I absolutley thought the same thing, having a set of Aurvana Lives myself. Except for the wood, its the same headphone. Just buy the SXFI amp and get a pair of them for "free".

CAL are not extremely well build, but pretty comfortable. Mine are still holding good since 2010 and only the leather surface get worn out. I replaced cable in mine for Tonsil and added amphenol jack, sounds way better after recabling.

That's one of the drawbacks of on-ear headphones. You could try aftermarket pads

I’m wearing them right now with replacement ear cushions. They’re actually the Dekoni sheepskin made for the AT M50x. They show up here frequently. They’re a skootch too big, but not as bad as you might think. It keeps the drivers off my ears and I think increases the sound stage ( though I’m aware that may be confirmation bias, lol). At any rate they sound great and are a LOT more comfortable. Note: I tried some velour pads first, but I really prefer the sheepskin. Your mileage may vary.
