How do this compare to Audio Technicas ATH-M40X? I between those and this Purpleheart. Which has better audio quality? I like flat response, but a little bit of bass is cool, what I hate is overpowered treble.

catchingdropsI have the ATH-M40X but haven't tried the E-MU Purplehearts. I can speak about the ATH-M40X who are very good in terms of audio quality and flat response. I've read many reviews claiming that M40X are better than the M50X and worth the money.
I'm using the M40X with this DAC and it powers them more than enough and gives clarity - https://hifimediy.com/Sabre-9018-DAC
From reading the E-MU reviews, I'd say the M40X is non comparable and much much better than the E-MU but this is just my opinion!

catchingdropsI’ve only owned the purplehearts for about 12 hours so take this comment with that in mind. That said, if you love a flat signature you may like the m40X better. I find the purplehearts warmer than the 40s. The purplehearts are also lighter weight. Very easy to drive with my phone too so perfect for commuting or having medical care inflicted on me.

TimewalkerDACs don't "power" headphones, AMPs do. DACs are purely for clarity. The M40X's don't need an AMP though, they're super easy to drive even from a phone
