Product Description
If anyone understands the importance of a good knife, it’s Eric Ochs. Growing up in the Oregon countryside, Ochs naturally gravitated toward knives for outdoor pursuits, and in the mid-2000s he made his first one Read More

Minor minus (pretty much the rest of this whole writeup is entirely positive): The blade is missing juuuust that last little bit of bite to make it scary sharp but that's really the only thing remotely negative I can say about it. Well, that and maybe that the flipper action made me forget that this has thumb studs (update: my thumb is bleeding a little from trying too hard. Oh well, at least I haven't cut myself yet). It's certainly tuned more as a flipper. No framelock regret here: this liner is geometry is implacable. Compared to my other favorite flipper, the ZT0801, there seems to be less material removed for the spring bar on the Orca (flipping-wise, I am going to find my Torx set and try to retune the ZT a bit. It just feels so loose by comparison right now but it's also because I've tinkered with it before). Lockup is spot on 30% as far as I can tell. The grip conveys supreme confidence even without any sort of thumb jimping. The backspacer grip comes right into the palm for maximum security. And the finishing: purely gorgeous. I can't say if I would have preferred the blue over the purple but I can say that I will never regret laying eyes on it. It's such an ethereal look. The marbled carbon fiber is my first CF knife handle and it's pure magic how it catches and refracts the light. The only other CF knife that I've handled for any length of time is a Lionsteel PM-4 with CF handles (can't find any pics of it anymore) that I got for a friend (what was I thinking?). That knife had beautiful sculpting but I don't remember it approaching this level of stunning. If any of these impressions change after some pocket time, I'll return to update. It'll be hard to have it out and about but it's even harder not to want to see it used the way it was meant to be used.

Fair Warning: This knife is not, by any means, the size of a pocket knife. Yes, it locks, folds, and has a clip for your pocket, but that is it. This knife is big, hefty (but not heavy), and built as a workhorse! Expect this to be able to do all of your utility tasks and more, and expect it to be the size of a fixed-blade. This knife is absolutely incredible, regardless of how people comment on the RWL34 steel. Eric Ochs put in the work to make sure that this knife is strong, durable, and as sharp as possible. The fact that this knife looks incredible is a huge bonus! I am another purchaser of the Purple Mokuti and Carbon Fiber model. It adds a bit of a "stealth but flashy" look to the knife. This knife has the ability to cut anything, especially with the extra sharpening that Ochs did after production of these knives! The tip of the blade looks threatening with the spear-like shape. However, that tip is meant for utility. Most of the top of the knife widens out to a large flat area where you can rest your fingers safely if you need to. However, you should not have to hold the blade as the handle and grip for this liner lock is even sturdier than the blade itself. Expect to be amazed if you get the chance to get this!

I decided on the black G10 version as that suits my aesthetics best. This is also my first knife manufactured by Reate. Fit & Finish/Aesthetics: Easily one of the most attractively adorned knives I own now. I went over the entire knife with a keen eye and have to say this is one tightly manufactured piece. Not a single seam out of line, no blemishes whatsoever. Action perfectly smooth, blade centered and able to shave hair with ease. I will say the G10 benefited nicely with some Hoppe’s 9 oil as the scales came “dry” if that’s even possible. Not dusty, but ashy like my skin can get in winter without enough lotion. As others have commented, the space between the lock and G10 scale is a definite pinch hazard for your thumb. I really feel like this could have been avoided by making the forward choil on the show side scale 2 or 3 millimeters larger to allow for a roomier access as is often the case on a lot of frame/liner lock knives. Not sure why they chose not to here. It takes a certain technique for me to avoid the pinch, which is just making sure I go in with my thumb as much to the side as possible; no jamming it down from above like I can get away with on other knives. It’s not a deal breaker and at this point has become second nature practice for me. All that said, it locks up at a nice 40% with zero stick. It’s really nice. Disassembly: It’s my normal practice to disassemble all my new knives to clean any factory grease/dirt out of them and apply my own KPL. I liked that all outside screws (pivot and scale) were one size of T8. You have to start on the show side as one scale screw on lock side is covered by the pocket clip that is attached with an internal/hidden screw. This is where it got tough. Separating the scale from the liner took a lot of very careful and long minutes. It was as if it was they were welded together and I didn’t want to damage anything. Once undone, the screws holding the liner to the backspacer are T6 and they came out easily as all the others. But wow, getting the liner separated from the backspacer and stop pin was another careful and slow process. There is literally zero tolerance on this build. At this point I wanted to get the lock side scale off the liner to see if I could carefully file down the scale where the lock bar meets to avoid the pinch. I never got that far as the screw holding on the clip is Loctited on. Further attempts would have stripped the head. This is not ideal on any knife as I feel like I should be able to disassemble it for maintenance. I may try Nick Shabazz’s trick of applying heat to the screw head with a soldering gun down the line. Is taking apart that side necessary? I don’t think so for a lot of consumers. Opening and Closing: As I said already, the thumb pinch is a thing when unlocking the blade for closure and can quickly be avoided with the right technique. The lock itself is smooth and easy. The flipper tab is perfect for me. Not too big and not too small, just the right size to achieve proper leverage without protruding out in the pocket too much. The thumb studs could have benefited with more empty area around them as they are a bit difficult to access for me. However, they work just fine for a thumb flip, but I can barely break the detent in a spidey flick attempt. I have seen reviewers do spidey flick just fine though; not me. [Update: After some practice on technique, a spidey flick is a reliable method of deployment for me. To further the "more empty area around" the thumb studs comment, this could have easily been achieved if the studs has been placed further back on the blade to sit more in the center of the forward choil area.] I do like the looks of the thumb studs regardless. Action was great and so smooth from the factory with a shake shut closure. Action improved quite a bit with KPL and is close to fall shut now. It definitely has an action all its own compared to my other knives. I find it to be comparable to the Ferrum Forge Pro series. Feel and Carry: Some have said this knife is “beefy” or big. I think it’s about right for a 3.5in blade. It takes up about as much pocket real estate as the MD/Gavko Thresher, just a bit thicker, but not much. The pocket clip slides in and out with no hangups at all and rides pretty deep. I like it a lot and have no complaints. In hand, the knife has this super solid feel that's hard to describe and is unlike any other folders I own. Sort of like a small fixed blade feels; just sturdy like it handle a lot of work. The grip is very intuitive and comfortable with no hot spots for my relatively small hands. And I like the harpoon tip as extra leverage to rest the thumb. Overall, I think for what you’re getting at this price point is a deal. I feel like this an excellent addition to my collection and I really appreciate the Drop collaborations in allowing sought after designers to the public at reasonable prices. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone familiar with EDC/folder/pocket knives. I’m not sure I would recommend this knife to someone just starting out as there are some minor issues that could turn off a newcomer.

Good knife, a number of minor things that make me never pick it.
Overall quality of this is amazingly made, it looks absolutely stunning and the blade is ground amazingly thin behind the edge. Flipping action is good and it works well with thumb studs too, although I did get one replacement model and the detent was different so I don't know how consistent this is. I got the purple mokuti model of it and it is honestly an absolutely beautiful knife, but I just don't carry or use it. What I didn't like is a number of small things that I wouldn't expect at this price point. First of all, the lockstick was severe on my model and as much as I love the looks I stopped playing with it or using it cause it hurt to try and get my finger in there to close the blade. Following on the first one, the second thing was lack of a small cutout in the front scale to make it easier to disengage the blade. I only have medium hands and it hurts me to close the blade so I can only imagine what the larger handed guys are like. Third, and this is the big one; the thumbstuds are either too tall or too sharp, I've torn the pockets on 3 pairs of pants now including an expensive pair of kevlar motorcycle jeans because they catch on the threads and rip them out as you remove the knife out of the pocket, this was a huge down for me and made me stop carrying it very shortly after getting it. Fourth, and this is just more a nit pick, I feel the closing action could be smoother. All my Reate made knives at a similar price point drop shut without an issue and this one feels sluggish in comparison. This is the fiddler in me nit-picking, but for those who like that could be a minus too.

this review is not based on the product but the shipping company used.
I would advise Drop to never use Postnl. I understand that during this unprecedented time, shipping goods has become unreliable and frustrating for most companies to find alternative means to ship goods in a timely manner to their customers. From my first update on this product, where it was confirmed to be at the shipper’s warehouse, it has been 33 days. The updates received on the order status tracking page also give no real information as to where the product is, to potentially give the customer an indication on when they could potentially receive the product. Ultimately, looking back I would have spent a little more on an upgraded shipping method if it was available.

MIA Just Arrived!
It never arrived. Nothing past June 5th on tracking like I've seen here with a few others. It seems as if it was "lost in transit" per the email I received from Drop. Refunding me is of course the correct decision, but I wanted the knife and now I'm not too sure I want to deal with the hassle again. (Oh, I had to add a star to post this or it would have been 0 stars.) Well, it arrived today with a smashed up box in a blister bag, but the knife itself is perfectly fine! I wasn't expecting it since DROP determined it was lost in transit and refunded the money for it weeks ago. The knife looks nice and has a good, fluid movement to the draw using both the thumb stud and the quick tab on the back, no scratches or cracks in the scales or on the blade - its flawless. I didn't want to get rid of the original review since it was purely based on the poor shipping and is still applicable. As for the knife - I would definitely recommend it... just with a different shipping provider. Way to go Drop, nice knife! I'm thinking of using that refund you provided to me to buy it's little brother still up for sale. I'm still a bit iffy on shipping.

Best Ergonomics + Design (IMO)
I absolutely fell in love with the purple mokuti when i saw the photos. Now having in my hand is even better. The quality is insanely good and fits my hand perfectly. I bought 2 just to keep one as a safe queen.

Awesome
Gorgeous knife. Solid build. Melts in my medium sized hand. The action is buttery smooth. Love this knife, its going to get a lot of pocket time. My ZT 0562Ti is going to get a break. RLW34 blade was sharp out of the box, which is more than i can say for a couple Benchmades and Microtechs I have gotten. It sharpens up to a mirror edge almost as easy as S30V. I haven't used it enough to comment on edge retention. Assuming its going to be about the same as S30V far as I will be able to notice. I haven't seen any voids in the carbon fiber. Maybe if i got a magnifying glass out I could find one but i am not going to bother. The thumb stud is sharp, and will wear on your thumb when fidgeting with it. I just use the flipper, so its not a issue for me. Gripe #1. The cabon fiber was really sharp where your index finger sits. I found that unpleasant surprise the first time I actually used the knife. A couple strokes of a small metal file fixed it though. You could use sandpaper its only carbon fiber. Easy fix either way. Gripe #2. Not really a gripe but I wish they would have numbered the carbon fiber versions since they said they were only making 400. It would have made them a little more special.

Gorgeous knife. Could not be happier.
I am very, very happy with this knife. The design and aesthetics are simply outstanding. I really like the blade, and the grind is as close to perfect as you can get. Scalpel sharp. Definiely a must have as well as a keeper.
