Checking in with my Eric Ochs Orca with marbled Carbon fiber and Purple Mokuti S/N CD044. It is absolutely stunning! Great design and beautifully made by Reate! Edit: One thing to add that’s not great is that I can touch the tip of the blade when the knife is in the closed position. Anyone else have this issue? There are also a couple of places on the carbon fiber that have dents and dings. Here’s one. Hmmm, maybe I could be happier.

  • I can touch the tip of the blade, but I don't see how I could do it accidentally.
  • Carbon fiber on mine looks pristine
  • Blade is sharpened, but the back of it isn't sharpened perfectly even side to side. On a fixed angle system, this is going to be a chore. Plunge grind wasn't enough.
  • Overall sharpness is what I would expect out of a high end production knife. It falls slightly short of what I would expect out of a midtech or custom.
  • Lock bar access isn't great, I can't get my finger on it easily, and have to use my thumbnail. Wish they would have scalloped out the show side a little more to allow easier access to the lockbar
  • Flipper action is what I would expect out of a Reate. It's very good.
  • Thumb stud action is okay, but I could see it being a challenge without a callus
  • Closing action is okay, it doesn't fall shut, but it isn't rough either.
  • Lockup is solid, and provides a nice loud click, reminds me of my sebenza or slysz bowie
  • Ergos are overally very good, but I would have favored a little more contouring on the lower part of the handle where my pinky finger sits. All other areas seem to be contoured more.
  • Knife is very good in a hammer grip, and the harpoon works perfectly with my thumb
  • Knife isn't good in a pinch grip due to the thumb stud placement
  • the pattern on the ti around the pivot is washed out and doesn't look anything like the photos. The lines are too thin to make out any detail.

anteck7Its true that when I touched the tip of the blade in the closed position, I was trying to see if I could touch it by moving my finger gently in between the scales. It looked like I’d be able to do it and I was able to do it pretty easily. It’s one of the few knives I own that I can do that to but it’s not something I’m overly concerned with I guess. It passes my first three BIG tests when I unbox a knife. Is the centering perfect...yes it is, does it have a strong but not too strong detent...yes it does (I hate weak detents), can it effortlessly slice through paper from the heal of the blade to the tip of the blade repeatedly...yes it can. It’s also almost drop shut smooth without doing anything to it except opening and closing it a bunch of times. I can’t tell if mine was resharpened, the grind is very even. Eric Ochs said that 90 percent of the knives were resharpened but I can’t tell if mine was or was not...that’s a great thing if mine was redone. I feel like the lockbar access is good...I have no problems there. I like the way it feels in hand and if I’m careful, I can choke up and place my index finger on the sharpening choil pretty comfortably, but it would be a risky move if I were to do heavy cutting with it, with my finger on the sharpening choil...it’s probably not meant for that. I really like the blade shape and love the brush finish on the grind going in one direction and the brush finish on the flats going in another direction. Other than the big (to me) dent on the carbon fiber, it’s a pretty perfect knife.

CdoyleI ended up keeping it. I thought a replacement may not have the perfect centering, perfect detent and razor sharpness that this one has. Massdrop was really nice about it. They gave me several options...eventually they ended up refunding me some money back to my credit card and crediting my account with some money for a future purchase. I’m kind of a perfectionist so the ding still bothers me, but everything else about the knife is incredible!
